When most of us think of caring for the family dog, we have in mind a sedate walk around the block once a day, maybe an obedience class when he's a pup, a good brushing once a week and lots of hanging out together watching TV at night. And then there is that special breed of dog - the high-energy, need-a-job-to-do, groom-challenging kind that comes in all looks and sizes, but shares one commonality: He is undeniably high-maintenance.

My first Dobe was a stray who wandered in and 99% of the rest were rescues.
Maybe I just attract a different kind of “stray”.....:D
We do Cocker rescue and also help a friend who does small breed rescue. Cockers are great dogs, but they do need a lot off attention; bathing, brushing, ear cleaning. We make sure the new owners are aware of what they are getting into. We get very few returned.
They are right about poodles shedding. Especially the adolescents. We see quite a few breeding dogs from puppy mills and back yard breeders that have never been groomed and are dumped at the pound. We call them Rasta-dogs. You can also tell they haven’t had much human attention. We clean them up and give them some love and they recover quickly.

I was complimenting the loyalty of the owners to their Dobes. :) I have yet to see a Dobe dumped in my neighborhood. I find it to be a testament of sorts.
I lurk alot on these threads and don’t always post. I love reading the stories...and it is very evident you are an animal lover.:)
A lot of them get dumped by people who bought a Dobermann pup and then were shocked and surprised when it later acted like an adult Dobermann.
Sometimes they get dumped when the backyard breeder genetic problems crop up and the owners don’t care enough to spend the money to help the dogs.
They’re not a dog for everybody, I confess.
There are tons of Dobe rescue leagues and PetFinder always has pages of them.
You’d have shoot me dead to take mine.
Heck, it was heartbreak enough when I let my rehabbed rescues go to their new families, even though I knew they’d have gloriously happy lives.

Of course you are right that no breed is exempt from abandonment. I only speak from personal experience. Although I can’t think of a breed or cross breed that hasn’t landed at my place, I have yet to open the door and find a Dobe looking for a hand out. Hmmm...maybe I should rephrase that?
(Just kidding,I would be less apprehensive of a Dobe than I would of some of the smaller breeds.)
A German Pinscher would be perfect for you! (average size of male German Pinscher is 30#)
They are not like Miniature Pinschers. They are like little Dobermans and look like Manchester Terriers.
The German Pinscher is the foundation dog upon which Louis Dobermann based his breed.
[and yes, I’d love to have one but they’re just now returning from near-oblivion and probably cost a fortune!]

In fact, Dobe breeders have been considering reintroducing GP lines back into Dobe lines to try and negate some of the current genetic problems.
It will take a while to make a significant impact but sounds extremely promising.
I assumed the genetics would be so bad for those odd colors, I didn’t even ask. How sad. :o[
Neither of us had ever raised a puppy, but the hubby likes to hunt. He called me from a gun show and told me he had a "surprise" for me...a nine week old German Shorthaired Pointer was plopped in my lap shortly thereafter.
I LOVE my dog, but I had absolutely no doubt that the list would include the GSP...LOL!
Honestly, the first two years were spent doing nothing more than making sure that she didn't kill herself. It was quite the learning experience; I would have two or three more if my husband would allow it!
Wear a light color...brown hair all over me. Wear a dark color...white hair shows up.
It doesn't help that she likes to sleep on the laundry.

We currently have Five dogs. One Westie, one Scottie, and three Australian Terriers. Love them all and for the most part they all get along. The Scottie is pretty sure she is the enforcer of the pack. She guards the doorway to our bedroom and won’t let the Aussies in. She’s best friends with the Westie so she can pass by without issues. About a half acre fenced backyard so they have lots of running room. They will kill anything that gets into the yard and then eat it. The smallest Aussie isn’t allowed out unattended as she will climb the fence and chase the horses. The wife complains about having five dogs but I know she loves them all. Out of them all the Scottie is the one that need the most grooming and the Aussies need no more than a good brushing and an occasional bath.
Yeah, but who gave him the whip?
