When Jim Berger, now 68, was 12 years old, he wrote to Wright and asked him for a design for his black Labrador, Eddie, offering to pay for the work with money from his paper route, according to the Associated Press.
I would appreciate it if you would design me a doghouse, which would be easy to build, but would go with our house..., read the letter dated June 19, 1956. (My dog) is two and a half feet high and three feet long. The reasons I would like this doghouse is for the winters mainly.
After another exchange of letters six months later, Berger received the plans, free of charge.

I'm a huge FLLW fan but had never heard this story. It's a pretty nice looking doghouse, I must say. Not that I'm surprised.
[Sorry, couldn't find a photo I could link to directly]

I love his work (except all the leaking roofs and under-supported cantilevers)...but he wasn’t a very good guy...which is fine with me as I appreciate the vision more than his persona offends me. Of course I never knew him personally, but if I had, I doubt we would have been best buddies. Ayn Rand, who did know him, said she didn’t like him at all. She used modern architecture in “The Fountainhead” but stressed that Howard Roark was NOT modeled after Wright.

If you are a fan, as *must* is a visit to the
campus of Florida Southern College [Lakeland]Click *photo tour*; it's truly amazing; **The architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright on the campus of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida, is a little known Central Florida treasure. Florida Southern College (FSC) has the largest concentration of Wright designed structures anywhere in the world with 10 buildings and two additional structures on campus, and is in the National Register of Historic Places.**

Ha! I knew someone would find a picture. Tell me, though, how did you do it? I searched Google images for a picture where I could "Copy Shortcut." Darn. I feel like a newbie at this and I've been programming since Nancy Pelosi was actually pretty.

Ayn Rand, who did know him, said she didnt like him at all.Oh, man, it's funny you mentioned her. I constantly explain to FReepers that Rand's personal life should not detract from her philosophy (agree with it or not as you may.) Many geniuses led troubled and conflicting lives. Wright and Rand were certainly two examples.

*must* is a visit to the campus of Florida Southern College [Lakeland]I've never visited it but have seen photos. As with all Wright's work, I'm sure it must be striking in person. I have to add it to my itinerary for my next trip to Florida.

“(except all the leaking roofs and under-supported cantilevers).”
Well, he was ahead of his time as far as materials and construction methods. We could build his designs today with no problems. Falling Waters is incredibly beautiful, but I doubt I could stand the constant humidity!

I couldn’t agree more. There is certainly an element here at FR that is in automatic disagreement. I don’t recall the thread and I probably had no business there, but I once asked “Are religious internet sites taken over by conservatives, or does only the opposite occur”. I’ll never do that again, I’m lucky I am still here.

"We could build his designs today with no problems."Indeed we could, and often do.

Everything he designed is timeless. And completely original.
(except that dog house, I’m sorry)
