“New Mexico does absolutely not suck. One of the most beautiful and culturally interesting parts of the country.

I spend two years working the Four Corners, on the Navajo, Southern Ute and Apache reservations. I took the books and in my off time went to many of the out of the way places mentioned.
Once we were stuck on location waiting on a truck to move our trailer, the first night the Navajo cops stopped to check on us. Asked did we have weapons and when we said, yes. They told us to answer the door armed.
I just finished the latest Charlie Moon and LMAO.

I’d love to go out to New Mexico and see the Navajo Reservation and Shiprock, and other places mentioned in the books!

Wes Studi did a film called “The Only Good Indian”. It takes place in the early 20th Century and he’s a guy who tracks down Indian kids who have run away from the boarding schools. He wants the bounty, but he also wants to be accepted by whites so he can become the first Indian Pinkerton agent. Anyway, if you’ve got On Demand and you’re a Studi fan, check it out.

Going back to the SW, on the fringes of Hillerman country this summer for two weeks of camping/hiking. It is nearly obscene how much I'm looking forward to it - already started making gear/packing/menu lists etc. even though the trip is almost 3 months away. Mark me down as another Hillerman fan that envies your plan and wants to emulate it. I feel lost without a new Hillerman to read.

I tried the Thurlos on the recommendation of a bookseller on the plaza in Albuquerque a couple of years ago that claimed to have known TH. Personally, I think you had it right with “alas” because it just didn’t pull me along the way Tony’s books did.

My, my. I sure ticked you off. Well, this “pie in the sky liberal” grew up and worked in an Arizona mining town of some 4,000. I finally left Arizona for mine jobs in Nevada and finally here in Oregon when the Arizona mines began shutting down in the 1980’s. A number of Navajo miners worked where I did and for the contractor, Cementation. Additionally, there were several Apache miners. Just now, I’m living in the largest town I’ve ever ever lived in at 20,000 and I hate Oregon’s cold and rain although the country is pretty.
Over the years I lived there, I been over most of the back roads in Arizona and a lot of those in New Mexico. I like the country there and a lot of the people.
Lighten up. It used to help level my head to go out to a hillside somewhere and listen to basically the lack of city sounds. Try it sometime.

I got the same recommendation from a bookstore owner in Farmington, Thurlos didn’t excite me either.

I have read all of Hillerman’s series on Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. I have never read any of Doss’s books are they along the same lines as Hillermans? TY Martha

JA Jance writes about Cochise County and is pretty good. It is not any of the reservations around the area. Just a small town large area sheriff.

Doss’s books are more humor than mystery, but deal with places on Southern Ute reservation. Fun reads.
