Is United Airlines profiling dog breeds? If so, I'm a logical person to ask for help. I've stood up against local governments banning specific breeds (usually municipalities seeking to ban any dog looking like a Pit Bull). Breed bans have never demonstrated success at lowering the number of dog bites.

United Airlines confirmed its adoption of the Continental Airlines Pet Safe program as the merger of the two carriers became official earlier this month. The Pet Safe program, which had been in place for several years, bans nine dog breeds on planes, including the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier.
From the perspective of United, the decision was based, in part, on an incident which occurred on a 2002 American Airlines flight from San Diego to New York. A dog identified as a Pit Bull (who knows if the dog was really a Pit Bull, since so many dogs with Pit Bull characteristics are mistakenly identified as Pits) broke out of its kennel and wreaked havoc in the cargo hold. The dog chewed through the plane's electrical system, causing a potential safety issue, not to mention thousands of dollars in damage.
Luckily, there was no damage to the plane's vital flying systems, and the flight landed safely. The dog was not dangerous, per se, but apparently panicked. Had this happened with a Standard Poodle, I'm not sure if the response would have been so extreme. As a result of this one incident, American banned several breeds, including Rottweilers and Dobermans (even though these breeds were not involved in the 2002 incident).

“it is said to...” should be “it is fair to...”
dang autocorrect.. We hates it.
>> The dog chewed through the plane’s electrical system,
Thank God only Pit Bulls cause this kind of mayhem.
I’ve no problem with this.
The dogs mentioned are short nosed and cannot be tendered during winter months. I believe the breeds are allowed to fly in summer months. I can’t remmember why, but it is for the safety of the dogs. Cost of shipping a dog is around $400.
Not all dogs are short nosed, But I did handle a millitary dog today, a German Shepard, who didn’t look very nice. Also, you are no longer to sedate a dog under new Gubmit regulations. If you ever saw a dog after a flight, you never ship it again. They seem very disoriented.
Gal on the phone asked why we were shipping her, then went ballistic, ranting about "how'd YOU like to be ripped from your family; caged, transported, restrained, and then repeatedly RAPED!?! I WON'T allow it!" I replied that if I were a bitch in season, NOTHING would please me more. She then hung up on me.
This was the Old Days of landlines and no way to get her ID to report her; to get her supervisor, she would have had to transfer the call.
We booked on a later, after her shift ended, but still reported the incident.
I always tried to avoid United after that, but for that particular destination had to use them.
Rotties and Dobbies are great dogs. Watch out for those little bastards..
That flight in 2002 was lucky it was’nt my Jack Russell that got loose in the cargo area, it would have been all over.:)
Another small step towards Sharia (unclean dogs).
Actually it’s always more difficult to ship in the summer because the temp control is not on in the cargo hold until the plane is in the air. The coldest is 45 F and the warmest is 84 F (or for very short nosed dogs, and I don’t think this includes pit bulls) is 75 F. I’ve never had trouble shipping in winter, but summer is often touch and go, you try to ship early in the morning.

I have shipped dogs many times, they have always been fine. And for the most part the people at the airlines were kind and helpful (and liked dogs). In 20 some odd years of flying dogs around the country (and 2 international flights) I have never had an issue, other than not being able to get them onto a flight because of temperature restrictions or other weather related issues.
Wow. I have shipped pretty much every carrier (that carries dogs, not all do of course). But I guess it takes all kinds. When I was in TX I really liked Delta. Here I have liked Continental, but with the merger I’m not hearing wonderful things (and I have not shipped a dog since they merged). Anyway, still, I never had a problem when booking flights, even back in the olden days, other than the usual stuff like trying to figure out when the temps would be appropriate etc.
Yea i never heard a pit bull yell Alla Ackbar! then attack
We hates it forever, Precious? :-)
Silly lady. A bitch in season is not being “raped” (dogs cannot be “raped” by other dogs, anyway); she’s actively *looking* for a dog who can service her. You are simply controlling who her “boyfriend” will be.
:-)
Hopefully the airline didn’t retain her much longer after that. what unprofessional behavior.
There were two bitches in that story. ;-)
Someone please enlighten me, aren’t dogs that are shipped(air or other wise)contained inside crates? If so, how do they pose a problem to anyone? I would think shipping horses would cause far more problems than shipping dogs, regardless of breed.
Rottweilers and Dobermanns are not on the list but the other dogs are.
[I just caught a raft of crap from a “I must be right or else” pr*ck on the Dobe forum for ‘posting false information’. no good deed goes unpunished]
*Some* brachycephalic breeds can’t be shipped during certain temperature ranges because they’d suffocate, however, the rest of the dogs are simply “oooo! scary dogs!”.
If I’m not mistaken, that’s why they sell good, strong crates for air shipping.
Graphic stolen.
Thank you.
