A man who police say assaulted and carjacked an 86-year-old World War II veteran is behind bars Friday morning. Detroit Police say the 21-year-old suspect was arrested around 1 a.m. Friday.

Aaron Brantley was on his way home from Bible study when he was assaulted in broad daylight and his car was stolen from a BP gas station on McNichols near Fairfield Street last week. Brantley told The Associated Press said several people passed by him as he crawled, unable to walk because his leg was broken in the attack. He eventually tried to pay a stranger to drive him home, but the man drove him for free, and called an ambulance.

Before making the arrest, police released a video surveillance tape from just before the carjacking

Who’s worse, the criminal or the people who passed him by while he was crawling along?

Hmmm. Detroit at 1 AM?

It’s a bad city and I can only imagine who did it.

Anyone who walks past an elderly victim is a scumbag, especially when the victim is a WWII vet.

A bullet to the back of that subhuman perp`s head would make for a good ending to this sad story.

Some of the media will mock the victim such:

“Where did the victim think he was, in a free country?”

“He should have known better, especially on the streets with a Bible?”

“He should have carried a Koran!”

Amazing, this “suspect” is caught on tape they know he’s 21 and he’s in custody but they fail to name him.

“...several people passed by him as he crawled, unable to walk because his leg was broken in the attack.”

Shades of Kitty Genovese.

BTW, in a related story link, a Detroit councilman is planning on fighting back against the violence by “holding a midnight march against violence”, and circulate a “peace pledge” for everyone to sign. He also wants to force gas stations to hire security guards:

http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2012/02/28/councilman-suggests-way-to-curb-violence-in-city/

The security idea is interesting, but as someone who used to work in the management end of that industry, I have to say it won’t work any better than signing a silly peace pledge. Aside from whether or not the city even has a right to tell a private business they have to hire a guard, there’s these points to consider:

1) It’s expensive. Even a bottom-of-the-barrel security service is expensive for a small operator. Figure a guard who works for the minimum wage will cost the gas station a few dollars more than what he’s paid - say the security company bills at $10 per hour for an $8/hr guard. That’s 400 bucks a week, just for one full-time guard. Chances are the gas station isn’t a 9-5, M-F operation. So let’s say 100 hours a week of service are needed. that’s $1000/week, or over $50,000 a year for what is probably an unarmed guard with minimal training. Armed security is going to cost more, sometimes considerably more. I’ve found that you often (not always, but often) get what you pay for when hiring someone to be an armed officer. Guys willing to work for peanuts just so they can carry a gun usually want to live out their Barney Fife fantasies and are more trouble than they are worth. Sharp people cost more, and off-duty cops will cost a small fortune (30 bucks or more an hour, probably). I can see a lot of smaller gas stations going under if this gets passed.

2) It’s Detroit. Can’t, or rather won’t, say too much here. Just understand that Detroit has some of the most onerous, anti-competition statutes on the book imaginable. And you might be surprised at the...interpretation... of these statutes if you try to do business in that town. People talk about “The Chicago Way”, but I’m telling you all here and now I’d rather do business any day in Chi-town than Detroit. And that’s all I got to say about that. :-)

A friend of mine who lives in the Sterling Heights area drives a semi for a living. According to his dad, Nick was somewhere on Detroit's westside Saturday afternoon and as he got back to his truck after making a delivery, he was jumped and robbed by two young black guys in their early 20's who were waiting for him.

He fought them off as best he could and got beat up during the process but not before he was able to administer his own ass whippin' on the second guy after the first one ran off.

He contacted the Detroit police dept. and they told him to come in and make a report Monday afternoon.....LOL!

Unfortunately for Nick, due to a felony conviction in his past, he's unable to legally carry a firearm for protection.

Security guards eh? Well here is my plan and one that can be easily installed on a rotating basis around liquor stores, fast food places, and gas stations:

Dress up a few police as old people making them look very vulnerable. Have a van chock full of cops with MP-5s and mossberg 12 gauge shot guns pull up and then have the decoy show up. When the decoy (or the van) gets attacked, have those secreted in the van hop and and screem April Fool and open fire.

I am sure some other senarios can be played out using this theme but after about six months of effective police work, guarantee the number of attacks drops off to a trickle. The benefit: Less crime without the cost of incarceration. Yeah, the ammo costs might go up but you have to take the good with the bad.
