In my youthful stupidity I have been way way past three sheets to the wind.....and never was so drunk that my state of mind was so off I could drink gasoline.....of course I'm not from north Carolina either !!!
Either way it's a horrible way to go....

He wouldn’t have to lie to get medical attention. He’s going to get medical attention.
If he couldn’t talk at all and someone else gave the account, I’d consider murder as a possibility.
Small splashes of gasoline igniting probably wouldn’t kill him unless he inhaled the flames (quite possible.) Soaked clothes igniting - that would kill him.

"Yeah, but do you drink the soup after the soak?"
Oh lordy, that's a thought! :-) At least you can pore it back in the truck though.

Your post makes a lot of sense to me.
I, too, see no reason in trying to rehabilitate idiots like that.

City spokeswoman Diane Miller said investigators believe Banning was at a friends apartment when he apparently mistook a jar of gasoline sitting by the kitchen sink for a beverage. After taking a gulp, he spit the gas out and got some on his clothes. There are so many aspects to this story that just doesn't make sense. How many people have a jar of gasoline sitting next to the kitchen sink? If all he took was a gulp, and immediately spit it out, I don't see how you could get enough on your clothes to engulf you in flames. At least some of the gasoline he spit out had to end up in the sink or on the floor. I don't think all of the facts are in on this story yet.

Did anybody actually read the article? He tasted it and spat it out immediately. The gas on his shirt ignited.
