Democrats quick to use quote to accuse Romney of being out of touch By Mark Russell, Newser Staff
(Newser) Mitt Romney's attempts to show he's just a regular guy continue to go awry. At an appearance at the Daytona 500 yesterday (which was rained out for the first time in history), Romney was asked by an AP reporter if he follows NASCAR. "Not as closely as some of the most ardent fans. But I have some great friends who are NASCAR team owners," he replied.
No big surprise that Democrats were quick to use the sound bite to paint Romney as out of touch with regular voters because of his extreme wealth, reports CBS News. "I don't know people who fish but I know people who own yachts," joked one Democratic Party operative on Twitter. The remark comes just a few days after a flub in Michigan, where he noted his wife drives "a couple of Cadillacs."

I cut down trees. I wear high heels,
Suspendies, and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie,
Just like my dear Papa.
LOL, the democrats are too dumb to see the stupidity.
Excellent!
Mitt isn’t a lumberjack but he is good friends with some Weyerhaeuser heirs.
Political instincts come from being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, and understand events from someone else’s perspective.
Romney clearly can’t think outside his own personal experiences. And, his entire life’s worth of experiences is that of a rich, pampered...
I don’t criticize him for being wealthy, I celebrate it. However, that was one stupid comment. He has a political tin ear.
Is that Mark Martin’s car?
Mark Martin’s car?
No, this was a photo proposal the Obama campaign did in 08. When they got a lot of negative reaction, the plan to sponsor a car for several fall races was dropped.
What are the Rats going to do? Say that having NASCAR owner friends is worse than having terrorist friends? I am not a Mitt fan, but I don’t think the Rats want to remind people of the character of Obama’s friends.
For at least 40 years the chant has been that Democrats understand the proletariat, the ones oppressed by the wealthy bourgeois.
And also for 40 years, the chant has been that Republicans represent those wealthy oppressors.
So Obama gets a pass, he’s a Dem, and Romney is evil because he’s a Republican.
The dems can rely on 40 years of conditioning and public school plus media chanting to insulate themselves from hypocrisy. I mean, Ted Kennedy understanding what it was like for me working as a janitor? Pelosi grokking NASCAR?
That was actually a joke. I remember a number of years back that Mark Martin came out in support of Al Gore in his run for the Presidency. He declared that he was one of the few democrat nascar racers. I assume he’s probably for Obama and would love to drive that car.
That’s some info I’ve never heard before.
Rick Hendrick was tight with Clintons to purchase a pardon of his felony conviction, but lately he’s been contributing to Republicans.
The only overtly political crew I’m aware of was the Roush bunch, they went on tour for Bush in 04.
Most of the drivers may not be overtly Republican, but I suspect the vast majority of them are. I wonder when the last time a major democratic candidate went to a nascar event. If there was one recently, I’m sure it was most likely a blue dog democrat.
Great, lets all parrot the Democrat “envy” talking points.
Great, lets all parrot the Democrat “wealth envy” talking points.
