Plantation, Florida: Last week police were called to investigate an attempted armed robbery. The 71-year-old retired Marine who opened fire on two robbers at a Plantation, Florida, Subway shop late Wednesday- killing one and critically wounding the other- is described as John Lovell, a former helicopter pilot for two presidents. He doesn't drink; he doesn't smoke; and he works out every day.
Mr. Lovell was a man of action Wednesday night.
According to Plantation police, two masked gunmen came into the Subway at 1949 N. Pine Rd. just after 11 p.m. There was a lone diner, Mr. Lovell, who was finishing his meal.
After robbing the cashier, the two men attempted to shove Mr. Lovell into a bathroom and rob him as well. They got his money; but then Mr. Lovell pulled his handgun and opened fire. He shot one of the thieves in the head and chest; the other in the head.
When police arrived, they found one of the men in the shop. K-9 Units found the other in the bushes of a nearby business. They also found cash strewn around the front of the sandwich shop, according to Detective Robert Rettig of the Plantation Police Department. Both men were taken to the Broward General Medical Center, where one, Donicio Arrindell, 22, of North Lauderdale died. The other, 21-year-old Frederick Gadson of Fort Lauderdale is in critical but stable condition.
Mr. Lovell was a pilot in the Marine Corps, flying former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. He later worked as a pilot for Pan Am and Delta Airlines.
He is not expected to be charged authorities said. ''He was in fear for his life,'' Detective Rettig said. "These criminals ought to realize that most men in their 70's have military backgrounds, and aren't intimidated by idiots."
Proving once more,...it’s not smart to mess with a Marine. Once a Marine always a Marine.
Americans have had it with the “whatever” crowd in this country. This is why the FBI lastest statistics are showing such big drops in crime. The bad guys aren’t the only ones packing heat anymore.
That's a keeper.
And a lot of them are packin’.
“These criminals ought to realize that most men in their 70’s have military backgrounds, and aren’t intimidated by idiots.”
You beat me to it. That is a GREAT quote.
The families are upset. They feel he had ‘no right’ to take the law into his own hands.

Poor little ol’ Donicio. He F’d with the wrong Marine...May his sorry arse rest in hell where him and all his thug buddies belong...Good riddance.
Thank you Mr. Lovell, good shooting. You’re an outstanding citizen.
.
If more people were like Mr. Lovell there would be fewer criminals. The idiot criminals that would remain would be fearful and very careful whom they tried to rob. Kudos to Mr. Lovell two head shots and one center mass now thats GUN CONTROLE.
ping!
News from July, 2008.
Still, it’s a lesson worth learning. One of the perps is still dead.
He looks like another feral young black man, now room temperature. No loss.
“The retired Marine apparently feigned dropping his wallet, and instead of picking it up, brandished a 9mm handgun and brought the robbery to a swift close.”
9mil: Apply directly to the forehead.
I really enjoyed this story the first time I read it. However, that was many years ago. This story is pretty old and should not be in the news/events section. If anywhere, it should be in the history section.
Nice grouping, dad...
It's like the old Hollywood myth about bad guys riding into town and shooting the place up while old citizens cower in fear. In actuality, most of those old citizens were Civil War veterans, and had more than enough moxie to deal with punks.
That's an interesting perspective on their part. I wonder if the crooks had a right to take the law into their own hands by trying to forcefully appropriate other people's property?
