I would be more likely to shoot/kill someone one who might harm my grandchildren, children or husband than myself.

Thank God I have never had to face this situation, and I really don’t think I will ever have to.
Having said that, yes, I think I could shoot someone if my life or the lives of my family were in danger.

Given human nature, the whole notion that the average person wouldn't shoot somebody if they had to is pretty stupid.
To: djf
It depends upon context, I think.
Fundamentally, I’m sure I could shoot to kill, if I had to do so. For example, somebody has broken into my home or, if I have time, he’s running across a field with the intent to harm me.
But I don’t have the level of killing instinct to pull out my gun, if I had one, and blast away indiscriminately£

Oh, I definitely could, and would. Armed homeowners will be the antidote for home invaders...we have to get the message that “...if you invade my home, you will die.”

I don’t look at it as shooting someone.
More like someone made the unfortunate choice to be in the way of my right to defend myself in an expression of bullets.
To: djf
No problem. The only thing that would stay my trigger finger would be a fleeing target. Legally, I’d be in deep doo doo if I fired on a burglar who decided to flee rather than fight. Yeah, I live in MA.

I can and will shoot to kill anyone intending me and mine harm. I practice quite often.

I use to walk home from work at night past a lonely, wooded area. I carried a small, sharp knife in my hand, securely. The thing I did, though, is playact and practice bludgeoning someone with it pretending I was being attacked.
I think that to prepare yourself to do the unthinkable, if you must, it is a good idea to go through the actions, pretending you are doing it. If you do this every so often you will be much more psychologically prepared if, God forbid, the time should ever come where you need to act to protect yourself or others.

When the moment arrives, there will be no time for self-doubt. Rehearse your response far, far in advance and make a plan. Go thru your plan enough times that it becomes rote.
Then, when the time arrives, act without hesitation. Grab, aim, fire. Then sit down, open a cold one and toast yourself and those you saved.
