Interesting, although I’m sure that the Monsanto defenders would shrug that off or try to explain it as a mere coincidence. This would probably explain why they’ve been so successful at fighting GMO labeling requirements.

If there’s really nothing to fear from GMO foods, why is Monsanto afraid to let consumers know what they’re buying? People have the right to know what -specifically- they’re buying. Any company that fights such a basic principle so fiercely is unethical. I’d rather see a product outright banned than let a company sell it under deceptive pretenses.

Transparency is good. It keeps people honest. We need it everywhere we can get it, folks, whether we’re talking about businesses or the government.

The Monsanto web site claims that the FDA believes there isn’t sufficient reason to label GM foods. So when we all acknowledge that the government is rife with corruption, I’m supposed to trust the wing that prosecutes Amish farmers who try to sell raw milk? Riiiight.

Informative post T-Jay.

I grew up in farm country and tend to be pro-innovation but like you I worry about the cumulative effect.

Thanks for your observation.

"I wish we’d at least pass a law in the US that requires companies to designate GMO ingredients."

I'm knew to the whole GMO thing, and I see a lot of people so irrational they can't explain what they're upset about without spitting and slobbering angrily:

So let me ask you, what such labels would accomplish. I actually don't know, so thank you.

"If a farmer plants non-GM crops in a field across the road from GM crops owned by Monsanto, and there is cross-pollinisation, then Monsanto can sue to confiscate or destroy the non-GM planting farmer’s crops."

Can you cite specific a case in law where this happened? Was it appealed? where?

It would allow people to make informed decisions about what they eat. Some, no doubt, wouldn’t care about the additional information. I believe that many others, like you, would try to learn more about the possible consequences of growing and ingesting GMOs.

At the very least, I believe that achieving a healthy level of public discourse would expose the FDA and Monsanto’s shameful conduct. Why shouldn’t people be allowed to know exactly what they’re eating? There’s no reason to keep such harmless information away from the public.

I’m always in favor of putting knowledge in people’s hands because I understand the power of an informed decision. Many young adults my age are liberal because their college professors fed them propaganda and never taught them to think. Good people support lousy companies because they simply don’t know what’s going on.

Whether you’re a GMO proponent or opponent, we should all agree that companies who work to keep people in the dark don’t deserve our support any more than the politicians in Washington who work to the same end.

And let’s not forget that raising awareness of governmental corruption can only work to our advantage as conservatives.

I really like your point that just on principle, if a company is fighting the labeling requirements so hard, then there might be some smelly fish involved! Transparency is certainly a good thing!

Not pickin’ on you, really!

The problem with the GMO thing is (maybe) not the genetic modifications themselves.

The problem is that they’ve been genetically modified to withstand a soaking in Roundup and still produce a crop for you and I to eat. Roundup usage has gone up from (IIRC) 7 million pounds to 119 million pounds since the introduction of GMO corn.

ok, i admit to be one of those idiots afraid of government and agriculture messing with our food supply. please explain why i should not be afraid of gmo foods. i dont even eat feedlot animals. i choose orgnic fruits and vegetables as the lesser of the evils in pestciides, etc. typing with two fingers with baby in arms - sorry for errors. tell me why more chemicals and pesticides, all neurotoxic, are good. i am seeing far too many neurodegenerative disease in humans as well as reproductive / sexual problems...

Why you should not be “afraid” of gmo foods? Depends upon what you are afraid OF. Most peoples fears regarding gmo foods are not at all realistic and more suited to a Sci Fi film than actual reality.

Organic foods and vegetables are a luxury item for the bourgeoisie, to use the language of your typical organic food enthusiast. Great if you can get it - too bad millions would starve if that was the only agricultural model.

GMO foods help to avoid more pesticides and herbicides.

Humans have never been more healthy - any increase in interesting diseases has come about through better diagnosis and extended lifespans.

Reproductive and sexual problems? Where? The human population is rapidly climbing to 8 billion. The primary reasons behind sexual dysfunction is being overweight and a smoker. Those organic vegan hippies are not all studly sex machines because they have avoided pesticides.

I grew up on an organic family farm, by the way. Love the lifestyle and the fresh produce. It is not a reasonable alternative for Earth's teaming masses.
