Extremely rare and striking photos of the days leading up to and after the historic D-Day invasion have been put on display, nearly 70 years after World War II's dramatic turning point.
The full-colour images, taken by photographer Frank Scherschel, display anxious American soldiers as they prepared for Operation Overlord, the code name for the Battle of Normandy.

Those are great.
My favorite caption: "Journalists ride in a parade after the liberation of the country"
Same as it ever was.

The comments are interesting. There seem to be quite a few people who have a problem with the way the one GI is holding his knife as he eats.
No wonder Europe is dying.

An African-American soldier stacks gas cans prior to the D-Day invasion of France ... Geez, I would never have known.

Yeah, its best to just enoy the photos and avoid reading the comments.
I pray we never have to spent American lives saving that place again.

An African-American soldier stacks gas cans prior to the D-Day invasion of France ...Maybe he'll get a movie made about him someday...

Thanks for the post.
I listened to the audio book and I did not know about the 13th hand.
Bradley did a masterful job of telling the history and aftermath of that iconic day. I highly recommend it.

Just researched the “13th” hand and apparently it’s not true. Darn. Need to go see for myself! My father took pictures from his plane when they restaged the pose at Iwo.

I am truly sorry if the ‘13th’ hand is false. I should have done some research before posting - but the friend who emailed the essay is a trusted veteran.
Will check it further.

If you go way way back to the beginning of the book reviews on Amazon there’s one by a person that is amazing. It says, “This is not the best book I’ve ever read...it’s the best book I’ll ever read”.

It’s a good thing we can get news from places other than the US media.
