Five killer whales have been named as plaintiffs in a lawsuit which argues they deserve the same constitutional protection from slavery as humans.
A US judge is considering a complaint by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (Peta) against SeaWorld.
It is reportedly the first time a US court has heard legal arguments over whether animals should enjoy the same constitutional protections as humans.
SeaWorld's legal team said the case was a waste of time and resources.
The marine park's lawyer, Theodore Shaw, told the court in San Diego: "Neither orcas nor any other animal were included in the 'We the people'... when the Constitution was adopted."
He said that if the case were successful, it could have implications not just on how other marine parks or zoos operate, but even on the police use of sniffer dogs to detect bombs and drugs.

How true about HSUS.
Most people confuse them with their local animal shelter such as the SPCA. This is done on purpose. They want people to think they are giving money to support their local animal shelter. However, they and PETA are one of the largest killers of dogs and cats in the USA. They do not rehome animals. They confiscate and kill them.
Also, the other great myth they continue to spread is that there is problem with overpopulation of dogs in the US. This is not true in general. Certain states in the south(AL, MS, LA, AR) have dog problems. However, in most of the country responsible owners spay and neuter the dogs. This has caused shelters, especially in the northeast, to import dogs from the Carribean because there are not enough dogs turned into the shelters locally. They make money on “rehoming” dogs. That is their product. They need a consistant supply to run their business.
Exactly. You know, it’s funny how the culture has changed since I was a kid. I know almost no one, outside of show people, who don’t spay/neuter their dog or cat. Few people want to live with an unaltered animal. Things have changed a lot in the past 30 years.
So if you keep a parrot in a cage, can you be sued for false imprisonment and denying the parrot its civil rights?
The fire ants will tie up the courts for years
I remember we had a female barn cat when we growing up. We always had kittens to give away.
A lot of folks would let their intack male dogs wonder and do what dogs do best.
Now, we raise beagals that my wife shows at AKC dog shows.
We are shipping one bitch on Friday to NC to breed with one of our friends stud dogs. It will cost us between $800 to $1000(Delta airlines ,stud fee, vet ,shots)to have this litter assuming she deliveres them the old fasion way and not a c-section($750-1500). We will need to sell one to two puppies just to break even. We have had litters that we have lost money on. People do not have any idea how much work it is to breed dogs and do it right. It is a labor of love. We raise them in our home. They are handled by us everyday since they are born. They are never afrais of people. This is why our dogs are worth more than a dog that you buy in a pet shop. Are dogs will never end up in a shelter.
Most dogs that end up in animal shelters are bought at pet shops or are mutts that were the result of an accidental breeding. This is a fact that PETA and HSUS will never tell you. Many of these dogs have behavioral problems. They come from large commercial breeding companies that operate mostly in Ark. and Mo. These are the companies that supply pet shops. Very few come with an AKC registry. Most have UKC registration.
Pet shops tend to sell to people who are impulse buyers. We get calls and emails from peolpe like this all the time just prior to Christmas. They buy the cute little puppy and then get rid of it 9 months later when its a dog.
Unfortunately tho, PETA and HSUS et al have done a great job of “educating” the public to believe that any breeder is a puppy mill and every purposefully bred litter kills a like number of shelter dogs by denying them a home. Try having that discussion, even here on FR (I’m sure you have). And unfortunately the Dog Fancy has been their own worst enemy as well, in trying to help the plight of the homeless pets. I am currently not even breeding since I live in a county with a restrictive breeder law. My Champion bitch is a spoiled rotten housepet who will likely never reproduce. Not that SHE cares.
We were looking at moving to another town here in NH.
I found out that the town only allows you to have one unspayed female. We currently have five. I guess we will not be moving there.
This isn't about the "rights" of animals but the privileges of "liberals."AfAIK no legislator has ever stood for election on the premise that animals have rights, and won. But then, only people vote, and only people are capable of understanding a vote or of counting a vote. This is all about "liberals" having the privilege to claim to speak for the animals - and if a whale, why not a porpoise, and if a whale and a porpoise, why not an ameba?
If it is self-evident that people shouldn't control whales, is it not equally self evident that whales shouldn't eat fish, or krill? And if whales are not to be permitted to eat krill, who enforces that edict against the whale, and by what right?

Busy bodies abound. This stuff is happening all over the country. Hobby breeders didn’t start fighting it nearly soon enough, they never believed the American public would agree to it, but agree they did. In fact, they embraced it. The average person will say that everyone should spay and neuter their pets and if you ask them where one should get their dog they will say, “A shelter”. If you tell them if everyone spays and neuters in about 10 years there will be no dogs, they will say,”Well, there will always be people who won’t do it.” So, they want their pets to come from, well, the logic boggles the mind.
