Gun Nut Vanity: need advice on auto loader rifle in .308 Win.
self

Posted on 01/30/2012 8:24:11 PM PST by AnAmericanMother

Fast succumbing to FN-FAL envy . . . but the Belgian FNs have priced themselves out of reach since hubby bought his 30 years ago.

I'm looking for a sturdy, accurate, reliable auto loader in .308 Win. (We have never owned a rifle in .223, hubby hated the M16 not just because they took away his M14 but also because the early ones had lots of problems. I have never been bothered by recoil, my deer gun is a Ruger M77 in .308. Besides, .223 would mean another set of dies . . )

I've looked at an FNAR, also an Armalite, but I'm throwing the floor open for wide ranging discussion. If you've got something, and you love it (or hate it), speak up!

Thanks!

All very good rifles...

Rock River Arms also deserves a look...

LAR-8 Elite Operator, Model 308A1276...

Accepts metric or inch FAL magazines...

Rock River products are first rate IMHO...

What he said.....

I have Springfield M1A .308 and it is my favorite rifle. I didn’t put any ‘lectrics on it cuz she’s perfect just the way she is. great all around arm. Even a Caveman could easily be proficient to 300 yrds iron sights. little practice and some coaching can get you to 600 yrds and a couple more.

It is very reliable and puts up with a lot of abuse. like running 4,000 ends through it before cleaning with zero fail.

It will take any ammo. I have my fancy eexpensive rounds for when it counts. But, I shoot Russian steel casing. Orinoco crap. So. African and a bunch of other surplus.

She lovez me and love her.

Get one. they are worth every penny in performance and dependability.

Oh! Do not get the M1A in 16”. Erratic performance at distances over 100yrds. Go with 18 or longer. mine is 18 and is great at any distance.

As an aside, get cleaning kit that fits in the buttstock. convenient though not necessary if you have cleaning supplies.

Lastly, get a 1” wide sling made of webbing. lightweight, durAble and can easily adjust to .... Well, you probably know most of this.

If you want to mount toys and ‘lectrics make sure you order the right piccatiny config.

My 2 cents.

I concur. DS Arms has some very nice stuff. There were a lot of FN-FAL’s made for numerous countries so the price is lower than any of your M14 variants. If I recall correctly, only the U.S. had M14’s. DS Arms makes the upper receiver and the rest of the rifle is from military surplus parts. FAL rifles are like anything else. You can start very basic and go up from there.

From what I've seen of DPMS, they do make a fine product...I've not handled them enough to make any kind of endorsement or recommendation.

Besides, the name "Armalite" evokes all kinds of Eisenhower-era mystique of Eugene Stoner with his slide rule, U2 spy missions, and cars with tail fins :^)

The round is too powerful for fully automatic so you lose nothing as a civilian.

Clyde Barrow would disagree.

You are right. An M1A will shoot almost anything. I bought a bunch of Argentine .308 surplus ammo. It groups real nice. If you can find some, you will be pleasantly suprised. Accurate and cheap.

My M4gery is a Rock River and I love it. It’s tight as a drum and wicked accurate. Never had my hands on one of the .308 variants but I have no doubt the quality would be just as good.

Best,

L

"If I recall correctly, only the U.S. had M14’s."

The Italians had the Beretta BM59 which was something of a Garand/M14 morph.

Marry the M1 with a Kimberly TAC II or Kimber Eclipse Target II chamberd I’m .45 and you can carry knowing both guns will continue to fire.....until you run out of those little leads thingies that make holes from long distance.

If you load JHP .230 grain use Hornady or S&W. my preference. everyone will have theirs.

Make sure you run 1000 rounds through to polish feed ramp.

The only “toy” I put on my M1A is the correct 2nd Gen Springfield Armory rangefinding scope. Took me a while to find that one, believe me.

It’s graduated out to 1,000 yards. Never had the chance to try that but at half that distance that rifle will wreck a bad guys day, that’s for sure.

Like you said, I love that rifle and she loves me right back. I’ve been offered 2 grand cash money for it. Turned it down, flat.

As Colonel Cooper said, “The Queen is not for sale.”

The first weapon I was issued by the armed forces was an M14 and I loved it. I used it in hot tropical weather in the rain and also in zero degree weather with snow. I never had a single failure of any kind, ie jams, misfeeds...etc.
I didn’t need to spend a lot of rounds, 1 or 2 to get the job done. The 7.62mm or .308 is a killer round both close and when you have to reach way out and touch someone.

I was later issued an M16 as a replacement and it was a disappointment to me. I could carry more rounds but I needed more rounds to do the job. It was accurate enough to do the job in most cases but not nearly as reliable or rugged.

LWRC REPR. Swiss Watch AR 10. Outstanding quality. Takes cheap Pmags (19.99) Multiple barrel lengths. Shorty, Designated Marksmen, Sniper. Different triggers and stocks on each. Whatever your need/role, they have it.

Paired with a Zeiss Rapid Z 1000 scope (best budget sub 1000.00 NOT a budget scope) Zeiss Diavari (no budget): Zeiss Hensoldt ( money is no object : )
