I've been putting this sticker on gas pumps:
"Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the [$8-$10/gal] levels in Europe." - Barrack Obama's Energy Secretary Steve Chu. Had enough yet???

I’ve worked most of the last three years in Prudoe Bay, east and slightly south of Barrow. I was up there winter before last when it was -46º with a 55 mph sustained wind. The wind chill was around -110º.
The trucks have to be towed into a heated building to get them restarted if they die or run out of fuel.
They DO NOT freeze to the ground, the ground has been frozen for MONTHS and it is not thawing out until May or so...

As long as the block heater is on they will start easily enough. The only time I ever had a car frozen to the ground was after an ice storm.
Then I only lived in northern Iowa.

We get minus 15 and 20 a bit this time of year. I remember delivering newspapers as a kid in daytime temps of minus 15 F. in Idaho Falls, ID. We got some really bad winters back then. In Havre, MT where a friend grew up, minus 40 was considered to be great ice-skating weather if the sun was shining.

4. Who, in their right mind, would want to live there (other than military operations sites)? The crime rate is probably pretty low. No flash mobs in the convenience stores.

Gee, according to Al Gore the Arctic should be ice free with nothing but the carcasses of drowned polar bears drifting to shore.

Just curious...you feel it’s ok to deface someone’s property with that sticker. The owner now has to pay someone to scrape your junk off his pumps. I notice you don’t put your name and phone number on it.

Clearwater and Clearwater Beach are 2 of my faves.
Back in the 80s when snowmobiling out of W. Yellowstone, MT it was -37F in the morning when we hit the trail down to Idaho Springs, ID. That’s where Clark’s Fork of the Missouri River comes out of the ground in humongous springs......and you can see the trout lying in there in rows, looking like battleships in a scene from a WWII movie.

I remember driving for about an hour the next day. The car never warmed up—cold air coming out of the vents. The tires were like rocks....
