If it’s a Florida panther (Puma concolor), it’s an endangered species, so you better not mess with it (and get caught).

I didn’t know panthers would “tear up trees with clawmarks”. Was it using the tree as a scratching post? Maybe the guy needs to go to petsmart and get one of those covered in carpet and put it in his yard.
I’m about 100 miles north of Davie and 10 miles west of Port St. Lucie.
Here we have bob cats aligators, every kind of bird imaginable, cayotes and wolves, and an occational Florida Panther.
They help keep the wabbit population down and are more afraid of you than you are of them.
