The "Marshal Dillon" show is in black and white. The first time you see this show, you will note that Matt Dillon's hair is jet black, even his eyebrows. James Arness, who plays Dillon, had light hair in real life. As the "Marshal Dillon" series progresses, Dillon's hair gets less black. By the time "Gunsmoke" rolls around, Dillon's hair is a brown color.

Thought maybe it was time for a break in the politics and "bad" news. We tuned in last night and what a trip to the past this shows invokes!

I am a James Arness fan..I miss him dearly and I could watch these half-hour shows all day long.

We watch the TV land channel a lot. Lots of old TV shows on that channel. Takes you back to the 1950-70 when there were decent TV shows on.

Yep..we watch TV Land too. I was really disappointed that they quit running Gunsmoke..mostly Bonanza in it’s place now. But, I like it too!

I recently bought a new car, and it came equipped with Satellite radio. I keep it turned to the old radio shows from the 30’s and 40’s and 50’s. I heard one show that aired in 1929.

I absolutely love it! Each time I get in my car, I have it turned on.

I have been known to sit in the car after I have arrived at my destination, to finish listening to a broadcast......

Yep, there were some great TV shows on in the old days.

How ironic, that with hundreds of cable/satellite channels nowadays, that there is less quality programming to watch.

I can’t believe how many reality shows there are nowadays, featuring people acting like idiots. And we call this entertainment nowadays. Unbelieveable.

I was talking to somebody who told me that “Teen Mom”, I think it’s called, is actually a socially responsible show. They told me that it’s a real life look at teenage mothers and their struggles. They hope the show encourages others to avoid teen pregnancy. I wonder how many come away with that message from that show....................

They are about 100mb per episode in 480p.
Use the free VLC player to play the 480p .flv files.

I’m also a big Gunsmoke fan and it’s hard to find the original, 30 ninute black-and-white episodes on cable, since most prorammers believe anything that isn’t in color drives away viewers. Nice to know the earliest episodes are airing somewhere.

A few tidbits about those episodes. Most of the early segments were heavily based on radio scripts that had already been produced. That practice continued until the series became one hour in length. By the time the TV series debuted, Gunsmoke had been a successful radio series for five years, with close to 200 episodes “in the can.”. So, the producers had plenty of material to work with.

Also, legend has it that John Wayne was the first choice to play Matt Dillon. However, there’s no real evidence to support that theory. But James Arness was under contract to Wayne’s production company when the series was cast, so it was easy for him to make the recommendation.

Gunsmoke was also one of the most realistic westerns on TV, in more ways than one. If you watch some of the BW episodes, you’ll see bar girls in the Long Branch go up the stairs with cowboys, and return a few minutes later—an obvious reference to the saloon’s secondary business (and Miss Kitty’s real profession). Amazingly, the CBS censors never caught on, and the scenes remained in the series.

Finally, if you watch the closing credits, you’ll see the later BW episodes were filmed by the Arness Production Company. When Gunsmoke became a hit, CBS was anxious to keep their star happy and gave him a chance to cash in as a producer. When the series expanded to 60 minutes in length, CBS bought him out and Arness became an even wealthier man.

***.... it’s hard to find the original, 30 ninute black-and-white episodes on cable,***

You need to get STARZ Western channel. It’s got lots of old black and white shows from the 1950s and ‘60s. Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, Wagon Train, RAWHIDE.

MARSHALL DILLON is just the name given to the GUNSMOKE series when they began to show the older shows in the daytime.

GUNSMOKE was the first to deal with adult situations until 1968 when all shows downgraded to kiddie shows due to the blame placed on them for Bobby Kennedy being shot. The MSM blamed comic books, Tv shows, movies for the Killing.
It got so bad with childish scripts that even Millburn Stone (Doc) complained about it in an interview.

Only movies escaped the downgrade by claiming they would police themselves. So the fox then began to guard the henhouse and movies went for blood and guts and BOOBS and BUTTS! Show em if you got em!

James Arness, who plays Dillon, had light hair in real life.

...as one might expect -- he and Peter Graves were brothers.

Gunsmoke premired about 16 hours before I premired. That show was that much older than me. It lasted long enough for me to watch and remember some of the episodes. It ended one year after I graduated high school. That was a long run. It was truly one of the best series ever to grace the small screen. The entire cast seemd to have been destined to fill their roles.

I fully agree. We have DirecTV and I told my wife that we have all these stinking channels and there are only a hand full that we bother to even watch. I watch military channel and history channel a lot. Some Discovery, but it depends on the trash that is on them. I watch some ESPN and I watch certain individual programs on the Christian channels. By 6 p.m. at night, I am normally done with TV and reading. I spend a minimum of 2 to 3 hours each evening in Bible study and reading on Christian issues. TV is just liberal propaganda now days.

There are channels that turn up on the over-the-air digital subchannels that specialize in old tv series, such as RTV and METV. They run this stuff 24/7, and don’t shy away from b&W series. Best of all, they’re over the air, and that means they are free. METV runs Perry Mason twice a day—different episodes.
