What you're looking at is the deck of the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan covered in the vehicles of Navy Sailors heading to Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Washington. At a cost of about $4.5 billion this is probably the world's most expensive parking lot.
It may seem phenomenal, but this is actually a common occurrence for the Navy and a lot cheaper and easier than transporting the vehicles almost any other way. The weight of one E-2C Hawkeye is approximately 43,000 pounds, or about 12 cars, and a Nimitz-class carrier usually carries four of those.
But more to the point, this does save the U.S. Navy money. First, the only other way to get vehicles owned by Navy sailors to their final destinations is to put them in another ship. Second, if they didn't send soldiers' vehicles they'd have to pay for transportation at the final destination. Both of which would absolutely would cost more money.
The U.S.S. Ronald Reagan recently served in Asia and was en route to Kitsap for upgrades and repairs.
The question is this, how far will a Chevy Volt fly off the catapult?
Should the area in front of the JBD be marked as handicapped just to show what would happen to a non stickered vehicle?
If I recall correctly the ship will be there for what, one or two years for a refit?
Makes sense to save money bringing the crews vehicles along in this manner, way to go Navy!
Hell of a drive off ramp even from off the elevators deck. Saves serious dough for sailors or the Navy, true.
Just think what it would cost if Congress made the decision.
Click on pic for past Navair pings.
Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
The fun part about these kind of deployments is you can launch Chevy Volts off the bow Cats.
Supposed to be a year.
In 1969 on our way back from Southeast asia the Hangar Deck was Stacked High with Motor Cycles purchased at our last stop in Japan, stereos and Every other Electronic devices purchased in Hong Kong.
I don’t see any handicapped spaces in that pic. The Navy could be in big trouble if a trial lawyer sees this.
I didn’t see any marked with a pink triangle either.
No doubt, officers cars BELOW, enlisted ON DECK..
Hardigree overlooks the fact that the squids could drive their POVs to Washington themselves.
