January 2, 1942:

"Most photographic equipment in Lódz was confiscated by the Nazis in 1939.
The limited photography that occurred was controlled by the ghetto administration.
Photographer Mendel Grossman fulfilled official requests as part of the statistics department, but he also sought to preserve a record of ghetto life.
Here he records a Jewish labor crew struggling to clear ice from the ghetto's streets."

The comparatively few irresponsibles who left Moscow and other threatened or occupied areas in disorganized fashion will probably also find the utmost difficulties in terminating their voluntary illegal exile.
What this of course means is that refugees fleeing the nazi onslaught were classified by the Soviets as deserters and traitors.
