Police kill dog after it attacked its owner

SIERRA VISTA — Officers were forced to shoot and kill an aggressive dog in an apartment in Sierra Vista after it attacked its owner.

The dog, thought to be a German Shepherd and Chow mix, bit its owner in her arm and head before police were contacted at 8:25 p.m. on Thursday and responded to Vista de la Sierra Apartments, 1555 Busby Drive, said Tracy Grady, public information officer for the Sierra Vista Police Department.

“When the officers responded to the apartment, they found the victim still inside the apartment with the dog,” Grady said.

The first officer on scene, Detective Nick Lamay, managed to subdue the dog.

As the dog continued to try and bite the detective, Lamay instructed nearby residents to help remove the victim from the apartment and to close the door behind them to prevent the dog from escaping, Grady said.

A second officer soon arrived at the apartment, and, as the dog continued to bite at the officer and show other aggressive behavior, the decision was made to shoot and kill the animal.

The same dog was involved in a similar incident earlier this year when, in August, it was quarantined for 10 days after it bit its male owner in the face, Grady said.

At that time, and up through the incident on Thursday, the dog was confirmed to have been up to date on all inoculations, she said.

The female owner injured on Thursday was treated at the scene for her injuries but refused transportation to the hospital, Grady said.

I’ve had three beautiful Geerman shephards, very sweet 90 pound females. It is difficult to imagine what a German Shephard-Chow mix would look like. But chows are not nice dogs.

We got a shep pup at 6 wks. He seems docile and very even-tempered but we have our house fenced all around and we never get robbed. He looks pretty mean when strangers approach. I have a 7 yr. old and 15 yr. old daughter. He loves to track shadows, birds, butterflys,etc..never shown any aggression toward us.We had a professional trainer check out his temperment. First dog I ever got. I hope my Shep does not turn on us as you describe....

>”But chows are not nice dogs’<

Both of the Chows we have had were nice, dumb as rocks, but nice. My Wife prefers the term “stubborn”, but I know they were dumb as Democrats.

When I was a little girl I saw a German Sheipard sitting on the step of his front porch. He looked nice, so I walked over and sat down beside hinm,. He snapped at me with a growl, and I was out of there! But my three German Shepards were beautifully trined and loyal do9gs. I doubt they would have snapped at a small child. In fact I had three daughters, and many friendss coming and going with no problems.

Other than the Boston Terrier I now own, Shephards are my favorite breed of dog.

My dad loved Shepherds and vowed that if any one of them ever bit a family member or other non threatening person, he would have put it down himself....

In fact, the last one he had, a magnificent one, had developed hip dysplasia in it's older years. So I was tasked with taking it to the vet to be euthanized the week before the family headed up north for our July 4 holiday.

There were young kids in the family and dad was afraid Zarek would reflexively turn on them and bite one if it patted him on the hind quarters...........

Dad worked with his dogs and he always believed that a dog that bit indiscriminately was the fault of its owner...........

Both our Chows were rescues.

The first male was about 5 when we got him. They told us he was about 2 years old, but our Vet disagreed. Took him a while to warm up to us, but he was a good boy. He lived to about 15, when he just couldn't get up any more. Had to put him to sleep. First dog I had to do that with and I'm in my 50’s.

We decided on another Chow about a year later. his time an 8 month old girl. Our first Chow wasn't that bright, but our girl makes him look like Newt Gingrich. She will sit on command if a treat is forthcoming. She will come to you when a treat is forthcoming. (Maybe she's not that dumb after all) She likes to play with her toys, where the boy had no interest. The boy hated being inside the house. The girl stays inside when we go to work. The dog flunked out of remedial training and I told my Wife not to waste any more money.

They both bark like crazy when people came up to the gate or ring the doorbell, but they both back away. Big bark, no followup. Once they get to know you, you end up with Chow hair all over your pant leg while you're petting them.

I think the owners are responsible for aggressive behavior, not the breed. Granted, we took a chance getting our Chows from shelters, but they both have and continue to give us a lot of laughs.

Nothing worse than old people with spoiled dogs.

Now, back to Politics. LOL

In this case the dog needed to be destroyed. I’ve never liked Chows and this dog was a mix.

Happy New Year SandRat!

“”The first officer on scene, Detective Nick Lamay, managed to subdue the dog. “”

They’re kidding! The detective was going to what - interrogate the dog?

I can’t imagine anyone shooting a dog INSIDE an apartment!

I never said that Sheppard’s don’t bite. Some of them do. But if you bring it up with love then it most certainly will never bite you or your family. They are very loyal at protecting family.

In the mid 60’s a neighbor kid used to run a stick along my family’s fence every day on his way home from school to antagonize our German Shepherd. One day the dog quit barking and the kid stuck his face in a knot-hole and got his nose bit off.

My parents paid the medical bills and that was that. In today’s society, the dog would have gotten shot and lawsuit hell would have come to play.

I think GSD’s are beautiful and if it weren’t for my previous experiences with them I would have one. The pup that bit me came from a breeder and they called him a German Police. I’ve heard that term before but I think they are all GSD’s. My concern then was my two-year-old daughter. If it had been just me I would have worked with him but I know that most times if a dog is showing aggression that young that it will be very hard to ever trust it. I’ve worked with dogs all my life and have learned that some aggressive traits are genetic. I wouldn’t trust them with a small child. It’s not a breed thing but more of a genetic issue with some dogs. If it’s bad training a good trainer can help but if it’s genetic there isn’t much that can be done. Dogs like that should not be bred.

My first German shephard, Gretchen, was without a doubt the best all around dog I have ever had. She was a beauty.

She didn’y like to eat alone, so she would carefully carry her bowl to wherever I was was in the house, lie down and politely eat her food. When I brought home my third baby, Gretchen led us up the stairs to the nursery, and promptly took up her post. We’d had her about four years at that pint. She was quite the lady!

The only time I ever heard her growl in menace was when an illy clad plumber came to the house. I told her it was okay, so she calnmed down, but she stayed on the alert until he d finished his job and left. Great dog! It’s been over 40 years and I still miss Gretchen.

Iam sory you had a bad expeieeience with what, yes, we used ro call them Police dogs. They are highly intelligent and can be trained very well.

With any dog it is wise to buy from a reputable breeder, do your homework on the breed of chooice and see it’s dam and sire. I hoopae you will give the Gernman Shephard another chance to beifhten your olife.

I will. I love all dogs. Right now I have five but when the time comes to get another dog I might give a GSD a try, especially since we don’t have any small children. Another dog right now is out of the question though unless it’s an emergency rescue. I currently have a Jack Russell Terrorist in the house, a 140lb Bloodhound and three rescues outside. Two of the rescues are half black mouth Mountain Cur. One is 60lb and the other is 70lb. I picked them up off the highway when they were 6 weeks old. My fifth dog is an Aussie that my neighbor moved off and left. My dog food bill and Vet care cost gets enormous at times. LOL

Well, my goodness, you do have your hands full! Especially with a Jack Russell Terrorist! I hope it’s not reall cold outdoorw here you live.

I had five dogs at onetime. Four Shih Tsus and a pekepoo, so they were all small, and I had them rpretty well trained. The used to wait for me in a lpuddle at the foot of the stairs. I used to descend, stop and address them: “I suppose yu wonder why I’vae called thi meeting?” Of course they immediately activated their approval with waving tails.

This was 25 years ago, and none of them are still here, of course. But they left me many happy memories. Good uck with your wonderful rescues. :o)
