Where the best cheese is made on the West Coast (Did you know there are cheese schools?)

Soft, stinky, blue, raw and fresh. No, not oysters; rather, different types of cheese. With evidence of production dating to 2000 B.C. in Egypt, cheese was likely invented by accident when milk was transported across the scorching desert in the cleaned-out stomach of an animal (an ancient milk jug). Milk + Heat + Acid = Cheese. While it can be made from yak milk in Iceland, or moose milk in Sweden, local turophiles should be thrilled that some of the world's best cheese can be found right here on the West Coast.

Every year for my birthday I would get Cougar Gold shipped to me while I was in the service. Now I pursue it myself.

Speaking of rogue, I was reading Henry Walpole’s Rogue Harried when I suddenly came over all peckish for cheesy comestibles. So I curtailed my Walpoling activities and sallied forth.

I’ve not had any in a long time, but http://www.loletacheese.com/ makes several local cheeses in Humboldt County, CA.

The EU canceled volcanic goat cheese more than 10 years ago. So where do you get this stuff? I’ve been looking for it!

Bulgaria has just about the world luxury market in hand with MARE’S MILK. We buy a chunk every now and then at an Afghan or Arab store around close. It’s EXPENSIVE but actually really, really good cheese.

Maybe when it comes to Bulgaria, when it comes to earthy peasant cheeses, they are a cheese making superpower. Give credit to communism.... It held them back so you have better rural cheese traditions there. I have a feeling that rural Bulgaria is swarming with sheep and goats. Cows not so much

Cheese.

I found out I have many food sensitivities last March.
Cow’s milk (and even goat’s milk) and anything made with it are off limits.

Good news is, I started to really feel great within a week of eliminating my allergic foods, and I’ve easily lost 25 pounds since March.

Bad news is, although I live in the land of cheese (WI) and love the stuff, I can’t have any!

Enjoy your cheese, you cheese lovers!

(this means I have not even had pizza since February!)

(or lasagne!)

(now I really miss cheese...)

But I am back to being the same size as I was in high school 30 years ago, so WOO HOO!

The food sensitivity test-food allergy test I had can be seen at this website...they test for 200 foods for a total of $257 dollars, no insurance taken, no doctor visits. That keeps the cost of the test so low. This test saved my life. My sister had this test 2 years ago and begged me to take it, I did and she was right, I had many food sensitivities that were making me ill. FReepmail me with any questions.

Order the “Combo E-95 + A-95” food allergy test panel.

Agree about the Cougar Gold. I've never had anything like it. Exquisite.

I only clicked on this thread to make sure someone had mentioned it.

Well, we can agree to disagree, and argue about Scotch, wine, honey, maple syrup, honey or cigars, then. :)

FWIW, I thought the Vermont cheddar cheesers learned their art from the Irish.

VIVA LA FROMAGE! VIVA LA MOOSE!

Do you know for a fact that Cabot *produces cheeses* especially for competitions, or is that just an assumption?

>>When you buy Tillamook cheese you are buying the cheese that won the competition.<<

When you buy Cabot cheese you are buying the best mass marked Cheddar cheese in the USA. And you are supporting small dairy farmers and traditions that are slipping away elsewhere, in this once great nation. :)

How consistent has their product been for you? Maytag is just across the river from me and they have a good reputation here. I tried their blue a couple of times and was not impressed. I got some for Christmas this year and it was very good. Moderately sharp and good veining. Hope the earlier experiences were flukes.

In my experience it’s been very consistent. We usually get it a Whole Foods and I always ask for a taste before we buy. They’re happy to do it. I know some here don’t care for Whole Foods but we usually only go there when we have a serious jones for some good cheese.

So my advice would be don’t buy it anywhere they won’t give you a bit to taste for yourself.
