ORANGE CITY, Fla.- Authorities in Florida said a man who awoke to the sound of his dog barking grabbed a gun from beneath his pillow and accidentally shot himself in the arm.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said John Ebberts of 16th Street, near Orange City, told officers his dog woke him up by barking at 2:32 a.m. and he apparently accidentally hit the trigger while pulling his Bond Arms Snake Slayer .410 shotshell/.45 Colt derringer from beneath his pillow, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported Thursday.

Ebberts shot himself in the left forearm with a .410 shotshell. He was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach by EVAC ambulance for treatment.

Yeah - that’s what I was looking for, too. Some incredible new technology, but we just got...a guy with a gun under his pillow.

I would think so. I had a 9mm derringer a decade or so back. That thing was bad enough. Very well made but due to the fact that I could not hit the side of a barn, inside the barn from more than about 3 feet, it was not worth owning.

I have several books of antique dog paintings but I don’t remember seeing that one. Think of the trouble 2 dogs chained together could get themselves into. Looks like a really bad idea to me.

he was sleeping with an AK-47 under his pillow? All guns are fully automatic AK-47s, that are prone to kill people at random. I once read the NY Times....

I agree.

The Bond Arms guns are cool in their own way, but they are big and bulky.

I have a .38 SPL derringer that is about half the size of the Bond derringers.

“Shotguns have no rifling and any thing with a barrel length under 19 inches is verboten.”

18 inches is the minimum legal length without going into NFA territory. Sheesh. Every body is an expert.

I was told 18 too, but a guy I know who bulged the barrel on a 12 ga and wanted to cut it down was told 18 1/4, 18 1/2 by various agencies, I think the local Sheriff gave him the 18.5. I told him its a good gun I would rebarrel it which I think he wound up doing.

Ha, I was quoting exactly what you said earlier when you were gently correcting another poster. Stings, huh?

“Recon,
Do you have a clue as to what a REVOLVER is? There is nothing on that two shot, two barrel, single action derringer that revolves. Sheesh. Every body is an expert. “

I have that derringer in .45 APC and .410 and have tried to fire it for accuracy at short range. By short range I mean about 6 feet. At that distance I can reliably put a bullet within about a foot circular of where I am aiming. The recoil is pretty intense and I didn’t perform this experiment very many times. Like I said, I think of it as a power knife.

I agree with you 100% the derringer is more what we call a belly gun, in other words stick it in their gut and pull the trigger.
I should have pointed out my carry guns are wheel guns with about 4 to 6 inch barrel range and yep I prefer the old western style with the loading gate. This is one exactly like I carry everyday.

It helps to have the right [may not be SFW] pillows on board.
