A good number of Canadians defied their Government in joining the US military during the Vietnam war. I don't believe the Canadian government retaliated against them.

Tens of thousands of Americans joined the Canadian army to fight in WWII before the US entered the war.

I don't believe they were punished ~

I had a Canadian in my unit in 1961 who join the US Army so he could become a US citizen.

If the poor ol guy’s still living in that much fear, why would the paper print his full name and location of residence?

The British Crown persecuted Irish Catholics for centuries. The Crown was complicit in such fun times as the Famine and the murder of Catholic people in the occupied six counties.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend, the old saying goes.

I gather the brave Irishmen buggered off here, the UK, or elsewhere in the Empire/Commonwealth, and the cowards that were left elected the biggest cowards among them into government.

"John Stout, now 80, served with the Irish Guards armoured division which raced to Arnhem to capture a key bridge.
He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge, ending the war as a commando.

So he fought in the 'Bulge when he was 13 or 14 years old. Interesting...

More of de Valera’s radicalism. He let that country sink into poverty too. It was he that offered condolences upon Adolf’s death.

He was one of about 5,000 Irish soldiers who deserted their own neutral army to join the war against fascism and who were brutally punished on their return home as a result.

They were formally dismissed from the Irish army, stripped of all pay and pension rights, and prevented from finding work by being banned for seven years from any employment paid for by state or government funds.

Beyond disgraceful - Ireland should hang its head in shame.

By coincidence, a good number of Americans defied their government in joining Canada during the Vietnam War. Carter made them feel all better later.

Uh, did they desert the Canadian army first?

“He was one of about 5,000 Irish soldiers who deserted their own neutral army...”

In the Mexican War (1846-48) many recent Irish (along with some German) immigrants who had joined the American army deserted and went over to the Mexican army. The main reason given was being Catholic same as the Mexicans, they were treated badly by the Americans. Later when captured, a number of them were executed.

I had no idea Ireland’s government was so depraved. That is completely sick hoping Germany would beat England just because it was England, without looking at what Germany was doing which was murder and robbery.

Ireland’s government was evil and awful. These soldiers should sue it out of existence.

My great uncle was killed at the Somme in France in 1917.

He joined the British Army in Dublin as did thousands of his fellow Irishmen to fight against the Germans.

Sadly if he would have survived WWI he would have undergone massive hate against him by the Irish when he returned from the war.
