One of my Spanish choir-ladies was in Puerto Rico (where she was born) for most of October and November. She said it was dreadfully hot this year, and the ocean full of jellyfish and sharks. I have a cousin in Maine - she has a baby due soon, and her parents were complaining about having to go up there in winter (as well as to their other daughters in Minneapolis and Buffalo, NY), but say it’s wonderful in the summer.
I’ll be happy to stay here in the dull Charlotte suburbs until I die.
The flooding was in the southern Island of Mindinow.
I’m sorry that she’ll miss the new baby, but it does sound as though she is doing well. When is the due date? :)
January 15 or sooner.
When I took early retirement at age 52, I wanted to buy a blue water boat and do some serious sailing. But the wife (now for 51 years) would have none of it. So we retired in Arizona on the Colorado River and have been here for 20 years.
Many people find the Mohave Desert drab and unappealing, but we find it beautiful in so many ways. we take the ATVs and do endless exploring of remote places with no people and it is great.
If you wish to conclude that the only reason this guy is living in the Phillipines is due to the availability of sex with younger women, then the only difference between him and the widows living in the retirement communities such as The Villages is the epidemic of STD's and the age of the sexual partners..........
My wife and I might be interested but woner what the chances of are getting a place at about 4,000 feet in the mountains of Luzon?
We’ve talked about this recently, and have decided that we love our home, but at times hope to visit warmer climes in winter, which can seem almost interminable by early March.
I don’t know what you are going on about. They speak english there and your money goes a lot further. That’s all there is to it really.
People also like to go to costa rica from what I’ve heard. It is a spanish country but I’m told english is so widespread there its hard to find someone that doesn’t speak english.
That’s wonderful. :)
When I lived in Asia, I knew quite a few Americans, Brits, etc, who retired in Thailand. They seemed quite happy. Basically they drank a lot, hung out with like minded expats and retirees playing golf, darts, pool, etc, and usually found various temporary girlfriends to keep them company. Most seemed like adults who refused to grow up, but the majority that I knew or ran into were quite nice and seemed delighted to be out of the West. I’d say most of them were people who had had jobs that required them travel a lot and they just picked their favorite spot, some were former military and others had worked on oil platforms or the like and had always come to South East Asia to spend their money on holiday anyway.
...Ex patriotism sounds better every day.
Herrington is well known for his blogs and forums.
He is, like most expats, bullish and may embellish some points.
As for medical care, it is not world class.
In my town there are a few small hospitals, but living here with serious medical issues could be problematic.
My girl had all of her prenatal care here in Dalaguete, even ultrasounds, but she needed a c-section, so delivery was in Cebu city.
That was not a problem, as a neighbor a few blocks away, is the town ambulance driver.
When she went into labor at 7 AM one morning, he was here in just a few minuets, and took us to the city in 90 min., less then half the normal time.
One interesting note...A month later his wife went into labor, and also had to be taken to the same hospital in the city for a c-section.
Making babies is the national pastime here.
One other note:
One does not need a car here, and very few people have one.
Highway bus transportation is fast and often.
We walk five min. to the highway and wait maybe five to ten min. for an aircon bus.
I travel my town by bicycle, but pedicabs for local travel are cheap and plentiful.
She asked, “What’s on TV?” I said, “Dust.”
What happens when the pension funds crater, as they must, and the checks stop coming?
I had not, in fact, concluded that, but simply mentioned it as an element in the essay.
I really liked the weather in Tagaytay.
