A court in the northern German town of Osnabrück has ruled that a farmer is allowed to feed his pigs vast quantities of raw onions, despite complaints from neighbors about their eye-watering gaseous emissions.
The farmer has been feeding his 1,500 pigs several cubic meters of onions every week for the past 14 years, but city authorities ordered him to stop, and threatened to fine him 2,500 (US$3,267), after locals complained of the resulting pungent porcine farts.
The council justified its decision on the grounds that planning permission for the pigsty forbade strong-smelling foods, e.g. kitchen waste.
But the court overturned the decision, saying that the city council had imposed the penalty on the assumption that the onions were to blame for the stink without providing sufficient evidence.

I guess my point is that pig farms smell awful anyway. Doesn’t seem like onions would make it better or worse.

1,500 pigs
The only smell I think that is worse than a pig farm would be the containment pond at a chicken farm...of course they also use that heavily fertilized liquid to irrigate their corn fields.

Know what you meant. Have spent more than my share of time around pig farms. But controlling the scent of pig flatulence is just the type thing I would expect from Germans.

Wouldn’t bother me. I have a bulldog.
And two teen boys.

Nothing could be worse than soccer shin guards. Those always went in the topper (nonnegotiable).

How could they tell the difference from say a deutsche football team? Methane is methane, and onions are onions.

“...Onions could still be banned as pig food, if the council proves they are responsible for the distinctive farts....”
They need to call Azz Venturi, Fart Detective.

People who want to “live in the country” but not BE in the country-— so therefore locals MUST change. Happens all the time in the US particularly to hunters and horsepeople.

There were several pig farms that got harassed by developers in my valley because the rich folks didn't like the smell of a pig farm near their fancy new houses. It seemed pretty unfair to me a family farm minding their business for generations and suddenly they are the problem because high end homes go up around them. I have nothing again beautiful homes or pig farms but it seemed that the pig farmer gets porked in such situations.

Their regular gaseous emissions are better? How could they tell?

I;m always amused by those humongous, run-together words of which the Germans are so fond. I’m sitting here trying to puzzle through just how they’d write “oniony pig farts,” lol.
