Weight of water from global warming is causing and will cause large earthquakes!!
Vanity post

Posted on 12/26/2011 9:15:48 PM PST by Wicket

A friend of mine watches the History Channel, because that's true information. Apparently she's seen a program twice about how global warming is causing the ice to melt and the additional weight of the water is increasing the likelihood of earthquakes.

Danger, Will Robinson, danger!!!

I don’t think another 250 to 300 psi would make that much difference down there.

Phase changes, freezing or melting for example, do not involve the creation or destruction of matter. Density may change, going from dense to less dense, but again matter is not created or destroyed. Therefore, I see how they can arrive at their conclusions.

RE “History Channel is a notorious source of misinformation and false history”

Yeah, It should call itself the Hysterical Channel.

Bigfoot is everywhere on the planet but no one has ever found his bones anywhere but every time there is a rustling in the bushes they do a show on it saying it was Bigfoot.

I once got suckered into watching one of their “documentaries” about a Mayan temple found on an island off the Pacific coast of South America. After enduring an hour of buildup the “temple” turned out to be a rock outcrop that the “discoverer” claimed was an overgrown temple!

This is not to say that they dont have some material that is reputable, but they really pander to the fringe in many instances.

Now it's Armageddon and I'm sure it will be 24/7 until 12/21/12. It must be true. Look at the date. I'm stocking up on cases of aluminum foil.

Not to worry! More ice cubes are being made as the temp. rises so the total amount of ice remains the same.

If the charge were true, the cause would be from the lack of shear strain caused by the ice pack and glaciers. Instead, the greater the reduction of ice pack, the more stable the earth’s crust becomes because the gravitational forces on the water shift the pressure to a hydrostatic stresses, instead of shear stresses.

Most failures in materials, such as cracking and seismic activity is caused by shear forces about a third as strong as hydrostatic stresses (see Lame’s constant and Poisson ratio for further discussion.)

Well, there you have it. Nature is self-correcting.

Obviously there are too many people on this planet so Nature is taking steps to reduce the number.

Isn't that what these brain-dead Leftist idiots want?

Using this logic, does this mean that the D.C./East Coast quakes earlier this year was caused by melting icebergs on Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River?

Sure is because I saw it on South Park. Maybe they knew in advance the History Channel was going to publish this rubbish. Everybody knows that obesity in the U.S. is the problem, not melting ice.

Uh, if the atmosphere is getting warmer it is able to hold a lot more water vapor. This would decrease, rather than increase, the amount of water on the surface. I guess, though, that the warmists would say, “Well, yeah, that would cause earthquakes, too, because you’re removing the pressure of surface water on the continental plates.”

The earth could be saved if we rounded up all the fat-chicks and moved them to the north & south poles.

Problem solved.

Moving all that mass away from the equator would cause the earth's rotation to speed up, flinging all the rest of us into space! I think it would be better to render all the fatties down, producing billions of barrels of high-quality biodiesel fuel.

I saw the episode.
She has the theory reversed.

Here is what was espoused.

During the last Ice Age portions of the Mississippi Valley was covered under a huge sheet of ice.
The weight of the ice compressed the earth layers.

Since that weight has been removed as the ice has melted the layers are slowly rebounding.

The Laurentide glaciation didn't get much farther south than northern Illinois in the Mississippi Valley. So it was a small portion of the Mississippi Valley that was covered by glaciers. Over east in the Ohio River Valley the ice got down about as far south as Tennessee. In the west, it got down about as far as northern Missouri. Most of it was covering Canada. There haven't been a whole lot of earthquakes in Central Canada.
