Assembly is Required for These Kit Homes
CNBC ^ | December 23, 2011 | Colleen Kane

Despite seemingly endless interest in decorating, landscaping, buying, staging and selling houses, actually building a house is a mysterious process that is mostly left to professionals. But for some homeowners, buying and in some cases assembling, a prefabricated home holds appeal.

A kit home can streamline the process of custom-building a house. While the prices aren’t bargain-basement, kit homes can cost less. Keep in mind that these homes cost more to build than just the sticker price on the kit. Buyers might have to pony up for windows, cabinets, fixtures, contractors, subcontractors and other features and services, in addition to purchasing the land where the house is located. The total cost to build the house, minus cost of land is called the turnkey price.

Had a log home.....once. Beavers came in and took the thing apart to make a dam. I think them putting the granite countertops on top was a bit showy.

Sears used to sell kit homes from their catalogue. There is (was?) a community comprised of them on Staten Island in NYC.

Nationwide Homes of Martinsville, Virginia is manufacturing small modular cottages, that can be ordered with solar already installed, pretty cool looking, they might have gone too upscale with the materials for the current market, though, fairly pricey for the square footage. Eco-Cottages, online PDFs on their site.

TinyHomes or whatever it is are nice. All you have to do is build a 60 by 40 garage and buy those 40 by 8 storage containers and you’re set. (We didn’t do the TinyHomes but did the rest and haven’t regretted it.)

Oh, now. You’re being unfair. That there’s a dee-luxe deerstand, a status symbol. You’ve got to know what you’re looking at. Shoot, that thing’s even wired.

Waay too upscale, even the Tiny House site. What obamunistas have in mind it the permanently on the road home, all equal, all homeless-- while the political class live in real homes-- a modern day version of the Dust Bowl:
