New evidence that bacteria in large intestine have a role in obesity
American Chemical Society ^ | December 21, 2011

Bacteria living in people's large intestine may slow down the activity of the "good" kind of fat tissue, a special fat that quickly burns calories and may help prevent obesity, scientists are reporting in a new study. The discovery, published in ACS' Journal of Proteome Research, could shed light on ways to prevent obesity and promote weight loss, including possible microbial and pharmaceutical approaches, the authors said.

Sandrine P. Claus, Jeremy K. Nicholson and colleagues explain that trillions of bacteria live in the large intestine of healthy people, where they help digest food and make certain vitamins. In recent years, however, scientists have realized that these bacteria do more — they interact with the rest of the body in ways that affect the use of energy and its storage as fat and finely tune the immune system. Claus and Nicholson decided to see how intestinal bacteria might affect the activity of brown fat. The "good" fat that burns calories quickly before they can be stored as fat, brown fat exists in small deposits in the neck area and elsewhere — not like "white fat" in flab around the waist and buttocks. No one had checked to see if those bacteria could have an effect on brown fat, the researchers noted.

White fat and brown fat? Seriously? Is this from the Onion?

Let me be the first to say it: That’s RACIST!

“I’m not fat, I have more white fat than brown!”

Honest, it wasn’t the 10 boxes of cookies or the 5 bags of chips. It also wasn’t the icecream or cakes, not even the pizza or cheese laden burgers. It’s the lousy bacteria I tell you!!

BTW, I hate walking this fat around so I ride the scooter to get me to the cookies, cakes and icecream. /S

You're not familiar with my posting history.

I don't discount it at all. Just adding, hopefully, a bit of humor.

Probiotic products are popular and I'm sure Nestle has some.

No problem. Misunderstandings are in the nature of this medium and I don't know what can be done about it.

Not an excuse.

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia last year. All the typical treatments caused nasty side effects. A friend recommended that I visit her husband, a DC who had some holistic treatments for Fibro in the hopes it wouldn't cause the side effects.

He did a full work-up and changed the diagnosis to Systemic Candidas. Gave me a diet to follow and a system cleanse.

Nine years worth of agony started to disappear in 3 days. It was nothing short of a miracle.

I was never considered "heavy." At 5'9", I weighed 155 lbs. before I started the diet and treatment. I ate heathly and didn't over indulge in anything, lead an active life running after 3 kids and working full time. Over the next 3 months, I dropped 33 lbs. It was 33 lbs. of TOXINS my body was holding on to.

Getting my health back was the primary goal. Losing those extra stubborn pounds was a huge BONUS! I'm now a size 4 again.
