I can see your point on that.
But at the same time, you do have the reality of matching an elf, who can swiftly run 7 leagues in a night (or whatever) and having a dwarf, who would be used to much shorter distances having to try and keep up. Tolkien, as I recall the books didn’t describe the interaction of such a mismatch.
I would agree with the dwarf tossing references.
Yea verily, and verily YAY!
The Hobbit Hole is still open...
To me, one of the most important parts of the LOTR was left out, "The Scouring of the Shire". That brings the war home to the Shire, and it's basically where the war ends as well.
Although I dearly would have loved to have seen Tom Bombadil and Goldberry.
Fantastic! Can’t wait. As a teenager & young adult, I also read The Hobbit & LOTR numerous times, and ultimately The Silmarillion just once. Probably my favorite books ever.
Is there a Hobbit ping list ?
He made multiple changes that are not explained by the necessary transfer from book to film.
For instance, changing the motivations and personalities of major characters, changing plot points, and making the personalities/motivations of certain characters so similar that it was difficult, at times, for those who had not read the book to differentiate between them.
Is there a LOTR/hobbit ping list? If so, I would like to be on it...
Ten years to the day since were were all coming back gushing about the FoTR in The Hobbit Hole. I met my husband there. Many of us who met there are still good friends, some have faded away.
I don’t know if that excitement, or that mood, can ever be recreated, at least here.
It is at least familiar and comfortable to see that the uber-geeks have lost none of their myopia. :~D
Really, shouldn’t Arwen be there? It’s reasonable that Galadriel should make an appearance, but not necessary. But Arwen really ought to be there working on her White Tree Banner and pining for her boyfriend.
Frank Langella! Maybe Christopher Plummer. Langella is my first pick. His voice is deep, basso...but kindof silky and menacing, too.
((uber-geeks have lost none of their myopia))
Maybe she will be there, it was just a few-second trailer ;~)
November 2012: Obama loses.
December 2012 Smaug dies.
Good way to end the year.
In fact, she probably is there, still lurking by the sword, Bilbo just hadn’t gotten there yet when it cut :~)
Alas, Smaug may survive until Dec 2013, as it is a two-parter.
I strongly agree. Instead, of that key scene we were treated to 20 minutes of overly sentimental farewells. They also overdid the "playing Gimli for laughs" theme, IMO.
On the other hand, there were a number of fine moments, including the death of Theoden / Eowyn's victory over the Witch King.
Uh... negatory there... I’m not the keeper of the list. Come to think of it, I’m not sure who is. Ecurbh?
Of course Jackson had to leave out the scouring of the shire. Keep in mind that by that point the movie is already some seven-plus hours long. It diverges from the main story which is all about the ring, the ringbearers and the great final battle for middle earth on Pelennor Fields. To then keep the movie going with a totally anticlimatic sequence about the shire would have been just unworkable.
For the book, it’s makes a nice denoument to wrap up all the details about Saruman. But what works in the book isn’t always practical for a movie, that has to be told over a far shorter span of time.
