Natalya Murakhver, a New York food writer and mother of an 18-month year old daughter, loved her premium brand orange juice -- the "100 percent pure" and "not from concentrate" kind that comes in the colorful carton and tastes consistently delicious.
That is, until she said she learned from her first-time moms group that there's a "secret ingredient" in all premium orange juices that companies are not required to put on their labeling.
Now, after writing Whole Foods, she refuses to buy her favorite, "365" juice, amid uncertainty about its contents.
"One of the moms said she had read about [how the juice is made] and they held it in tanks for up to a year and it pretty much lost all of its flavor and had to be reinvigorated with these flavor packs, which are essentially chemicals," said Murakhver, 40, and co-author of "They Eat What?: A Cultural Encyclopedia of Weird and Exotic Food from around the World."
For the last 30 years, the citrus industry has used flavor packs to process what the Food and Drug Administration identifies as "pasteurized" orange juice. That includes top brands such as Tropicana, Minute Maid, Simply Orange and Florida Natural, among others.
Murakhver said the addition of the flavor packs long after orange juice is stored actually makes those premium juices more like a concentrate, and consumers need to know that.

“Its amazing how long some of us have lived since we grew up on fried food, real butter”
I’ve eaten margarine since WW2 and can’t stand butter since it’s inconsistant depending on the stupid cow!
They can also take their grass fed beef and shove it!!!
I bought an Omega Juicer last August. I now fresh squeeze large bags of Valencias instead of buying OJ in a carton. It’s amazing the difference in the taste. Fresh squeezed OJ will quench a thirst, something carton OJ can’t do. I’ll never go back.
It’s also great for grapefruit, watermelon and apple juices, as well as green juices with kale and spinach.
Articles like this make me think women should be seen and not heard.
Most sports stories leave me thinking the same about men.
You mean orange drank.
ping
Just out of curiosity, do you know how many oranges one would have to squeeze for a standard 8 ounce glass of juice?
Obsessing about food ingredients is unhealthy!
For example, I learned this recently, most honey is processed in China. It is of poor quality, because all of the pollen, that gives honey it’s nutritional qualities, has been filtered out so you cannot prove the origin of it. All you’re putting on your bread or pancakes is liquid sugar.
To ensure you’re getting real honey, you gotta read labels to ensure the pollen hasn’t been filtered out.
pulp
LOL Must be the red dye.
2-4 oranges, depending on size.
It's still 100% orange juice.
“This is why frozen concentrate is actually the freshest”.
Is it? I would actually prefer to buy the frozen concentrate simply because you can make it when you need to (that is, I keep it in the freezer and try to buy it on sale).
Did it mention anywhere in the article what the dangerous chemicals were? I would have kept reading but I got attacked by a loud Nissan advertisement and quickly turned it off.
Orange juice is loaded with sugar as are most fruit juices. It’s better to eat the fruit itself, than drink the juice only.
They did. See #32.
It’s confusing, I know, but orange and orange juice are two unrelated products.
Back in my youth, the only secret ingredient in my OJ was vodka....
Thanks for the info. That might be a little on the pricey side for us.
Congrats on running the gardening thread. I haven’t posted there much in the past year. Dad died a year ago today. Hope to be more active there in the coming year. Can’t plant orange trees in Minnesota, but I’m looking forward to all of the other topics!
shopping today i see they still sell stacks of oranges for those that want them and the squeezers for them aren't far away.
