I know we’ve seen and heard “second World War” several times now, but I believe this is the first time I’ve seen “World War II”.

Re: the article about reprisal executions in France, there is a small item therein about seizure of Jewish property. I am currently reading Hitler's Beneficiaries: Plunder, Racial War, and the Nazi Welfare State, which argues that a main reason for the high level of German support at home for the Nazis was all the benefits provided by the state, and that a main source of these benefits was wealth, including gold, seized from Nazi-occupied territory. The main domestic beneficiaries of Nazism, according to the author, were not the 1% (in today's parlance), who faced quite high taxation, but the working and middle classes.
