Good morning gardeners. As many of you may know, my wife is a manager at a Wal-Mart Superstore. About a month or so ago she was approached, via email, by Wal-Mart, informing her that there was a position opening up in one of their stores in Shreveport, La. and they wanted to do a phone interview with her if she was interested. She agreed and did the interview. Well last week they called her back and told her the position was hers if she wanted it. We were given an hour to make the decision. Job wise this is a good move for her and Shreveport is her hometown and a few of her family still live there or near there. She has 4 brothers and 4 sisters. The decision for her was easy but for me it was very hard to agree to the move. We own the property and the small house here in Meridian. This house and property will be very hard to sell. We will have to find a rental house that has a fenced in yard and that will accept our two dogs.
The reason for me sharing this information with all of you is, I may not be able to keep posting the Weekly Gardening Thread and I dont know if I will even be able to have a garden next year. So I am hoping someone in the gardening community will be willing to continue the thread on a reliable and weekly basis. Currently there are 490 Freepers on the ping list and quite a few look forward to the thread every week. I am hoping at least one or even more of you would like to do the posting or even share the responsibility in posting the thread and keep it going.
They said that they want her in Shreveport sometime after Christmas but have not given a specific date yet. I will be staying here and keep posting and she will be staying with one of her sisters until she can find a suitable house.
The store she is being transferred to is on the extreme west side of Shreveport and she is looking in the Marshall, Tx area for housing. So if any of you know anything about the area please let me know.
The weather continues to amaze us here on the NW coast with mostly sunshine and overnight frost. Highs of 48 and lows in the high 30s and normally we would be up to our earlobes in stormy weather with too much rain. I am slow to get all the planters on the deck emptied due to my sprained wrist and my grandson is in Love with a new girl in his neighborhood so he doesn’t have time to help me. We haven’t had rain in several weeks and the planters are still overly wet and heavy.
Just saw on the Pickers TV show that there are 4,400 patents for Mouse Traps!!!
I spent an hour last night looking at all the different strange winter squash, Yea I know, I am strange.. Pretty ugly looking squash.. Can’t wait to grown them in the spring. I had no idea you could grown winter squash in South FL till last year when I tried it. My roto tiller guy told me about it. He grows butternut and makes a little cash on them.. I just do it for fun and rehab..

And that's the greatest reward there is on earth...
34 years as a lineman, Blew 3 disks and got a pacemaker.. I am beat up and put away wet.. I don’t think I could deal with the cold weather.. The Cold fronts drive me nuts.. When I have to pick my peas and greenbeans I have to sit on the ground and butt walk the row.. I am still happy and give thanks that God is allowing me to enjoy his world of gardening.. When I have problems or hurt I just sit in my garden chair and watch it grow!
I found a pair of really comfortable knee pads for a similar reason as yours.
Your community garden has my prayers. You have come so far with it and that is quite an accomplishment. I can't wait to see photos!
How many chickens will you be using to fertilize your garden? chuckle. In January, we’ll be extending our little garden inside the pasture (2 horses live there, neighbors horses) I’m using some gates not longer in use, then cattle panels to hold the veggies as they climb upward. I’ll be revitilizing our raised gardens and buying some earthworms to “plant” in them. I’m also thinking of making my own earth/manure pots to start seeds, but for next year. I saw some in a seed book and thought what a great idea, why not try making some.
How is Mark coming along with his injury? He’s still in our prayers.
Speaking of Earth Worms, I lifted the cover on one of my compost bins and there was close to 3 Trazillion Red Wrigglers on the surface. I had to dig down a couple of inches in the older bin to find some but they are there. Had my grandson empty the larger planters on the deck when he was here for his weekly lunch with us. He is a auto technician at the local Dodge dealer but he recently fell in love so...
Thank you so much for your prayers. They are working!
Some of the debri from my garden area has been removed. There are still to heaps of trees and stuff. I just found out I have more space than I thought. The area directly behind the Sr Center is also available. YIPPEE. As soon as I can, we’ll identify the water and electricty sources and how to utilize them. This is getting exciting.
