I need some advice.
I have a very special friend who loves good Scotch. He has everything else, so I thought I might wrap up a good Scotch for Christmas.
I know he'll use this, unlike some worthless gift he won't want (I actually got him a massage for his birthday last sumer and he wouldn't go -- it's a macho thing).
Okay I know this thread is going to raise some silly answers, but I am a beer drinker, and don't know a thing about the "refined" spirits.
Id appreciate any serious answers to my question.

You most definitely want a single malt scotch, GlenLivet 15 year old, French Oak Reserve, is the best, IMHO.

Scotch is sipped neat (room temp, no ice or mixer). If he drinks it any other way, do not buy him expensive whiskey because he cannot taste it.
Single malts are the best exhibition of Scotch whiskey BUT they are very individual. If you can get him to tell you which he likes then you can dare that.
Johnny Walker blue label is a blended scotch but is universally regarded as ‘very good’. It is very not cheap but I invested in a bottle a few years ago and shared it with friends as the first drink for quite a while. I never had a comment that was less than ‘great’ (and my friends are not shy).
good luck
Your second drink of scotch can be half the quality of the first and you will probably not notice.
12 year old McCallen is pretty darn good too.

Maybe if you would offer to give him the massage yourself, you could get by with a cheaper brand of Scotch.

Yuck!!! This is why the poster is going to have a hard time. I’m a highland guy and I don’t like the lowland stuff. I don’t like Oban and to me Laphroig tastes like kerosene.
Poster, find out what your friend likes and go from there.

He had better be a very special friend at that price. I would be willing to be the special friend for that particular scotch...LOL!

    Fishing Girl:
For a more traditional Scotch, try the coastal Islay offerings, like Ardbeg:

I prefer Islays, Springbank, Lagavulin, etc... Macallans are excellent, also.
Don’t settle for the mass marketed stuff for this occasion.
