Scotch is sipped neat (room temp, no ice or mixer). If he drinks it any other way, do not buy him expensive whiskey because he cannot taste it.

Single malts are the best exhibition of Scotch whiskey BUT they are very individual. If you can get him to tell you which he likes then you can dare that.

Johnny Walker blue label is a blended scotch but is universally regarded as ‘very good’. It is very not cheap but I invested in a bottle a few years ago and shared it with friends as the first drink for quite a while. I never had a comment that was less than ‘great’ (and my friends are not shy).

good luck

Your second drink of scotch can be half the quality of the first and you will probably not notice.

12 year old McCallen is pretty darn good too.

LOL, cute.

Scotch with a personality can be had neat, if you want to sniff it and meditate over the aroma.

If you want to drink it, though, use a little ice. Or a little water. Choose one method, but not both.

I prefer a wee dram of water to cut the alcohol and thus taste the scotch. It's Lagavullin in my house.
