I need some advice.
I have a very special friend who loves good Scotch. He has everything else, so I thought I might wrap up a good Scotch for Christmas.
I know he'll use this, unlike some worthless gift he won't want (I actually got him a massage for his birthday last sumer and he wouldn't go -- it's a macho thing).
Okay I know this thread is going to raise some silly answers, but I am a beer drinker, and don't know a thing about the "refined" spirits.
Id appreciate any serious answers to my question.
For something special, I might add Old Pulteney - especially the 21 vintage (though you may have to go Briton to get it).
But, if you want a conversation piece - get "Sheep Dip." Which, surprisingly, is comparable to the Glens.

Be careful with Lagovulin... it’s super peaty. Not all scotch drinkers like heavy peat. for those that do (like my husband!) it’s one of the very best.
Balvenie 21 )ear Port Wood if you’ve got the $$ - Famous Grosuse 18 Year Blend if you don’t ... Both are the best. Bang for the buck in their price ranges.

You cannot go wrong listening to posts #5 (find out his tastes, Scotch is a *very* personal choice) and post #37 (website describing Whiskey).
I've only recently begun imbibing Scotch: I like Balvenie but have heard good things about Glenlivet. If he likes a "peaty" flavor, Laphroaig is very good (I compare it to drinking find wood smoke, if you like campfires...)
By the way, I've been married > 25 years, so don't go all Herman Cain on me, but I've got to beat the other Freepers to the question:
Do you have a sister? ;-)
Cheers!
Yep. I am old and do not drink. Not for a long time.
Last year I actually got a bottle of 21 year old MacCallan. A bottle of Scotch old enough to drink itself. It was outstanding.
Modify that slightly. Thanksgiving & Christmas we have eggnog. (homemade, grandfather’s recipe) Occasionally a sip of port wine before bed.
Nothing else.
“Liquore”
Probably right. It think I read it started with Scotch Whiskey and they added special honey and some herbs. I have never tasted it.
My friend liked it so much he named his “arab” horse after it.
I tended bar once a long time ago for one Mr Smith, who at night after we were gone filled the bottles of Chevis and other expensive Scotches with low priced scotches. He did it for years. And got away with it. Almost no one could tell the difference. Paid us well, in cash, fired waitresses and bartenders just before their 12 month anniversary would come up so he didn’t have to pay for vacation time, then called back a couple of weeks later, spent some time in jail for failing to submit the employees’ taxes to the IRS, came back, continued as before. Now long dead.
Well, I couldn't just sit here and not say anything.
Famous Grouse
It's Lagavulin.
Regardless, if you think Lagavulin is peat, try Ardbeg. It's is the "peatiest" of all the Islay single malts. Liquid smoke.
As for the question of the day - the only answer is Lagavulin.
Not the Special Release Distillers Edition distilled in 1991, just the standard bottle. It cannot be surpassed.
When The Most Interesting Man in the World drinks Scotch, he drinks Lagavulin.
You’re the first person on this thread to offer up examples of what I actually drink with the appellation “Scotch Whisky.”
I’d add Jura to your list, as well as Bomore.
All you folks offering up Dewars and Johnny Walker: Please, do yourself a favor and part with some cash to buy the real thing.
The Lag might be a bit risky as a gift. One is either for it or against it, there’s absolutely no middle ground.
Advice: don’t pay for the advertising campaign and for the cardboard box.
