A gun-toting man on a bicycle in South Florida shot and killed a Doberman Saturday, saying the dog was threatening him.
Dan Abou, who was training the 2-year-old to be a therapy dog, acknowledged Scooby was in his unfenced front yard without a leash, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported. But he described Scooby as a gentle animal and said many dogs are allowed out without restraints in his neighborhood in Davie with no problems.
"It's very alarming that someone would be riding a bike with a gun at 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day," Abou said Friday. "That man came here looking for trouble. I still can't believe this."
Police were investigating the shooting. Investigators say the cyclist had a permit for his gun.
The Doberman Rescue League of Broward took Scooby in after the emaciated dog was found on the street. Abou adopted him in July and planned to use him as a therapy dog at senior citizens centers.
Some posters have apparently not read the article too carefully.
Owner agrees dog was in front yard but not chained.
Dog was shot and died in street.
Something not explained in article: By time dog sees approaching cyclist, chases him and gets close enough to credibly threaten, he’d be quite some distance down the road from his own yard. Especially since cyclist suddenly is supercharged by adrenaline.
I’ve been chased by many dogs and have tried a number of defense mechanisms. Biggest risk is often not the dog bites, it’s the high-speed (see above) crash caused by the dog.
I’ve had owners in front yard stand and watch their dog attack, then yell threats when I defend myself. Luckily never had any of them actually follow thru on the threats.
The dog remained absolutely calm. I had to leave, though. I wanted to take a bite out of someone.
In New Ulm, Tx, people carry guns when walking during the evening due to a problem with wild dogs. The wild dogs in Austin County have been a problem since they have been attacking people and livestock.
New Ulm is a little unincorporated crossroads in rural Austin County.
I got bitten on the leg by a neighbor’s dog this summer. First time that ever happened. Now I carry pepper spray. Haven’t used it yet, but there are a lot of people who don’t control their dogs. I hate them and their filthy animals. They think I want their dog running over and jumping up on me or my wife? Hell no. I also carry a knife and I’ll stab the thing to death if I have to.
I did include Great Dane. The leader of the group that I go to The Forum in Houston with has a Dane.

Where does the article claim the dog died in the street?

Was that using the ammonia spray or pepper spray? Still, did the person know where the bullet might go after hitting the dog? Then too, I can understand the cyclists point of view. A Doberman isn’t like your little rug mutt.
But what if it was a bunny? We know those can attack, too. Jimmuh had to fend one off with an oar, once. Out of control bunnies are a menace.
Not in the post I was responded to.
No, you probably wouldn't. All the more reason to be a responsible dog owner and keep it tied up.
I call BS. Who's ever seen a Doberman as a therapy dog?
I've been to Moscow. I never saw anything remotely resembling 26,000 feral dogs. I did hear the moon was made of green cheese, though.
Towns with Korean restaurants never seem to have a stray dog problem.
I've never been to Moscow and never to the moon. Yes there are stray dogs in Moscow and the Moon is made of dirt. It's really easy these days to learn about far away places. Below is a link to one of many articles about Moscow's stray dogs. Next time you are there, you could open your eyes.
