ITHACA, N.Y. - Researchers said the official New York state insect, the nine-spotted ladybug, is making a comeback after a 29-year absence.
The Lost Ladybug Project, an effort led by Cornell University entomologist John Losey, said volunteer Peter Priolo found a nine-spotted ladybug in Amagansett July 30 and further searches at the location in August found enough of the insects to establish a thriving colony in Losey's Ithaca lab, The New York Times reported Friday.
Losey, who said only 10 nine-spotted ladybugs were found in all of North America in the 10 years leading up to 2006, said he is now researching whether it would make sense to introduce the ladybugs to other areas.
"We need to find out more places where it's thriving," he said.

Great, another protected critter that will forbid a gazillion dollars in worthwhile development.

This is the conservative ecological approach.
When there is an endangered plant or animal, liberals demand that land be set aside so that theoretically it could increase its numbers, if it wants to.
Conservatives, however, say that if a plant or animal is endangered, the simple solution is to breed more of them. Accepting that attrition of artificially bred plants and animals is high, the end result is still a lot more of them.
Problem solved, and nobody has their land taken from them by government decree. Which was what the liberals really wanted, anyway.

Someone needs to make up their mind. Did they see 9 spotted lady-bugs or 10 spotted lady-bugs.

Hope it wasn't that *pyro-ladybug* that's been on the loose.

Turkeys in southern Michigan. When I was a kid they were basically extinct in my area but we had pheasants up the wazoo. Today we have few pheasants but barely a day passes when I don't see wild turkeys.
On my way out to granny's for thanksgiving I saw 15 or 20 turkeys along the highway and up in a tree.

I thought UPI (united press international) went belly up. One of the reason it did was doing Oh how cute reports for 8 year olds like this. Which doesn’t cover why this study is being funded, what this creature does or is good or bad for. No wonder there was no by-line assigned to it
