Intense ‘Twilight’ Scene Triggers Seizure Reports

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — A local man says the latest movie in the popular ‘Twilight’ franchise triggered a seizure, and similar incidents have been reported in theaters around the country.

Brandon Gephart and Kelly Bauman said they were watching “Breaking Dawn: Part One” at a theater Friday night when Brandon sudden began convulsing during a graphic birthing scene.

Brandon said he doesn’t remember anything until he woke up on the theater floor, but Kelly said he was, “convulsing, snorting, trying to breathe.”

“He scared me big time,” she added. Paramedics transported the man to the emergency room and the theater had to cancel the rest of the movie for that showing.

Several reports on internet movie sites show reports of other people suffering similar symptoms during the same scene, which contains flashes of red, black and white. Dr. Michael G. Chez, the medical director of pediatric neurology and epilepsy for Sutter Sacramento, said the reports indicate the scene may be triggering an episode of photosensitive epilepsy.

>>Perhaps the sipping blood through a straw caused the reaction of the person in the story—after all we are talking vampires etc here. <<

Um, it was photosensitive epilepsy. The flashing colors did it.

I gather you’re a Twilight fan,

“This phenomena is well enough known that the studio has no excuse or defense “

Abdo-lutely! Bordering on criminal disregard.

Now that's funny. That reminded me a lot of the epic Red Letter Media reviews (dissections?) of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

I did not know this could be fatal though.

Me neither.

People die of (or survive) the darnedest things.

I watched the interview with couple this morning. The dude is the kind of guy that applies moisturizer every day after shaving.

But at least he got out of having to go to those twilight movies with his wife/SO ever again.

I'd call that a win on his part.

“nation of Sissies.....

Are you serious? Flashing lights at certain rates can easily trigger seizures in people with epilepsy. There is nothing they can do to stop it.

You comment makes me believe we are more like a “nation of assholes”.

I’ve had this strange thing happen: people with advanced Parkinson’s who are nodding their head in a clockwise circle at one revolution per second make me pass out.

I work with a number of those afflicted with this so maybe it’s just more noticable.

Well, the lawsuits will cut into that $142 million opening weekend.

The gayness of the movie would have done me in.

Hmmmm, I wonder why? Some hypnotic trigger buried in the human brain?

I’m disturbingly reminded of a snake hypnotizing its prey for some reason.

very true. I survived a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Never had surgery for it. It just “went away”. I blame it on Jesus (thank you so much my Lord)... 8-)

I would probably get a seizure seeing any of these films.

Sadly, some dirt bag class action lawyer will soon be running ads on FNC asking "have you recently suffered a seizure after watching "Twilight" if so call the law offices of "_____" you are a victim, and you deserve justice!"

Fine print will read Greedy lawyer will get 99% of the money received, you'll get a coupon to Walmart!

Is that the scene where the doctor zones out while the slides go by, despite the solution being so obvious in front of her, and thus misses it?

That’s not sissies, that’s epilepsy. Hit the right rhythm with sound beats or light flashes and the epileptics are hosed. Nothing they can do about it, it’s genetic.

Epileptic susceptibility to optical stimulus is real, and until one of your own dies from one of those seizures I would recommend keep your ignorance to yourself.
