>>That occurred that was *before* we were totally inundated upwards of 30 million illegals in the past 20 years.<<
.
So, giving amnesty to 3 million illegals is OK but giving it to 30 million of them is not OK?
What about giving amnesty to (30+3)/2=16.5 million illegals? Is that OK?
Where do we draw the line?

so if a man gets away with robbing a bank has kids and grandkids then 25 years later is caught we shouldn’t lock him up because he’s obeyed the law since then and god forbid we break up his family
WHAT PART OF ILLEGAL DONT PEOPLE UNDERSTAND

“....but Newt did not offer citizenship, but merely legal status.”
.
As Rush mentioned today, “How long do you think it will take for the ACLU to get involved and demand that those who are here legally should be allowed to receive citenzenship?”
Is there a law on the books that allow people to reside in the US legally without also giving them the right to become US citizens should they so choose?

Newt did not offer citizenship, but merely legal status. They would not be allowed to vote. That is the most hilariousl thing I've heard all week. You've gone so far past slippery slope that you're in a speeding train flying down at 90 degrees with no brakes.

Your Dad granted amnesty and did zip in regards securing our border. Thanks for reminding us that he BLEW IT on immigration. That about settles it - if it were up to Freepers, even The Gipper wouldn't pass muster today....

I am not a Newt supporter, but am telling it like he said it, not how it's interpreted. And yes, it's a slippery slope, but it's the best we have so far. Do you really believe the government will send 10 million people out of the country, when many of them have been here for two generations, and have no country? Besides, about every federal law on the books is a slippery slope.

My mother and father were non-citizen legal immigrants. My only brother was killed in the battle for Okinawa. I was on Leyte as infantry replacement when the war ended. My brother and I had no doubts we were fighting for the USA as citizens and for a Country we believed to be the best of all.My mother(father died a few months before I was born) had a heavy heart but still accepted the sacrifice. Perhaps I read your post wrong but you seemed to suggest neither my brother or myself deserved USA citizenship.

I think they are all of nearly equal importance in order to be effective but since you pressed me to prioritize them...
- Enforce the law vigorously on employers of illegals.
- Eliminate entitlements for illegal aliens except for true emergency care.
- End the "anchor baby" policy.
- Strong border security. Build the physical fence and use high-tech surveillance.
- Deport illegal aliens on contact with LE.
Do those things and illegal aliens will self-deport rather quickly and pay for the trip themselves.

read it again dufus
no where did I say ONLY persons born of citizen parents can be citizens. Maybe you need to educate yourself about just what the anchor baby law is.

"Hispanic free nation. How glorious." Explain that bit of news to the Cubans and the Puerto Ricans who don't like the illegals either.

RR got my support primarily for his strong anti-abortion and anti-communism stances. He made the US respected around the world again.
Amnesty not so much. As I recall there was strong opposition even then to what was really Chucky Schumer’s scheme. That said RR went along but with the promise that future illegal immigration would be stopped and the borders secured. Neither has happened and there’s no reason to believe that under Bush’s amnesty or Gingrich’s amnesty it would either. Just more of the same until the borders are erased completely.
To: TigersEye
I agree with your attitude, but disagree with your priorities.
should be:
1. anchor baby policy
2. eliminate entitlements for illegals
the order of the rest of your list is inconsequential as far as i’m concerned.
To: 353FMG
No one suggested that it was OK.
I'm just telling ya the facts, and the facts are, the borders exploded into a violent war and epic invasion of our country *long* after Reagan was president.
When Reagan was president, the borders were absolutely nothing like the issue it has been for the past 15 years or so.

Newt has just done a more courageous job of stating his positions. Newt's been courageously stating this position for years. In fact he voted for the 1986 amnesty. So did Senator Grassley but he learned from the mistake and doesn't support amnesties anymore. Nothing would hand over this country to the democrats faster than another one. All it's going to take is for Texas and Florida to flip.
To: mamelukesabre
I did preface my re-ordering with the caveat that I didn’t think it mattered much. Try this one; if you could have all but one of those things done (and done right for hypothetical purposes) which one would you leave out? I have my pick as I was asked that before.

I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though sometime back they may have entered illegally, Ronald Reagan, 1984.Twenty-seven years later, how's that working out for you, America?
Why do you and your ilk refuse to learn from history?

Many argued back then that the problems of Mexico would be exported Norte. They were correct. I was in SoCal then. The problem was obvious to me as a 21 year old. RR pandered for votes and we are paying the price now. Get over it, folks, he was not a god. He was better than most but made some pretty big errors.
