It is the debate that has been raging between generations of science fiction fans.
But Star Trek star William Shatner believed he had delivered the coup de grace two months ago when he delivered a stinging critique he thought proved his franchise was superior.
But there is a new hope for Star Wars fans, as original cast member Carrie Fisher has struck back with a rebuke that could return the Jedi-filled universe back to prominence.
In a somewhat rambling YouTube video, the Princess Leia star let rip on the rival sci fi favourite.
She said: 'They are not in the same league. i mean they have the word star in the title, and there is space travel.
'Where do they go to, Klingon? It just sounds like a laundry detergent.'
The successful actress and author had a list of grievances with the television and movie franchise that she said made it inferior, including lacklustre visuals, make-up, toys and video games.
She said: 'Show me a special effect, maybe they are just effects, they are not called special effects.

They were both good. Controversy settled.
I think Harrison has held up much better than Carrie. She looks more like Jabba the Hut now.
I agree 100%. Space:1999 gets dissed—and deserves it—for many things, but it was at least different. Each week was like a Gothic in space—space was SCARY. The characters acted like adults—I could imagine Landau’s character watching one of Kirk’s histrionic explosions and saying “Calm down.”
It’s at least WEIRD. The other two are so bland.
LOL!
Probably 34 years' worth of sag.
Carrie...Get a Life!
Seems I caused a disturbance in the Force.
BTW, I lived in the far north for decades. DIAF didn’t sound that bad there.

“May the Force Be With You.”
“I love you.” “I know.”
“That Hayden what’s-his-name is a horrible actor.”
“You’re all clear, kid! Now let’s blow this thing and go home!”
Rot in hell. LOL!
Space 1999 definitely had it moments. Also, Blake’s 7 was rather interesting.
They both blow chunks. Fireball XL5 rules.
No it didn't. Had nothing to do with it, and SF was considered box office poison--if anything, the studio could point to how ST was never a ratings-getter as proof investing in SF was a waste of money. In fact, Star Wars showed there was a broad audience for SF, and made the Star Trek follow-ups possible--Star Trek The Motion Picture was made to cash in on the Star Wars craze.
And Forbidden Planet made Star Trek possible.

Take that back. Don't make me go all personal on you. LOL!
Both Star Wars an Star Trek were tainted a bit by leftism, but Star Trek much more than Star Wars. At least in Star Wars, the good guys are fighting for a republic, and against tyranny. In Star Trek, the “good guys” are basically the USSR of space, and the closest thing to capitalists are the Ferengi, which are painted as petty, amoral, greedy hucksters.
