It is the debate that has been raging between generations of science fiction fans.
But Star Trek star William Shatner believed he had delivered the coup de grace two months ago when he delivered a stinging critique he thought proved his franchise was superior.
But there is a new hope for Star Wars fans, as original cast member Carrie Fisher has struck back with a rebuke that could return the Jedi-filled universe back to prominence.
In a somewhat rambling YouTube video, the Princess Leia star let rip on the rival sci fi favourite.
She said: 'They are not in the same league. i mean they have the word star in the title, and there is space travel.
'Where do they go to, Klingon? It just sounds like a laundry detergent.'
The successful actress and author had a list of grievances with the television and movie franchise that she said made it inferior, including lacklustre visuals, make-up, toys and video games.
She said: 'Show me a special effect, maybe they are just effects, they are not called special effects.

I'm quite aware of William Shatner from his part in "Judgment at Nuremberg" and as Denny Crane. And as for James Earl Jones, I still mostly think of him as the voice intoning "This is the EIB Network" in the early days of Rush Limbaugh.
Jim Henson had his OWN show in the Trekkie daze!
Actually both ST and SW are merely off shoots of the original SCIFI show and the greatest of them all, “Captain Video and his Video Rangers”. I mean REALLY, who could ever forget the captains side kick known as “Video Ranger” and “I TOBOR” their robot assistant, the evil Ming and those fantastic rocket ships which used to shoot sparks out the tail pipe.
Remember those space helmets they wore? They were a plastic bubble with a square hole cut into the front. Somehow these able to protect the good captain.
I still have my secret decoder badge.
Not only that, but the word Ferengi came from "an Arabic name for European traders, or for Westeners in general."
Hmmm...there would never had been a “Star Wars” if “Star Trek” had not paved the way.
I prefer Space Balls. More fun!
This episode was interesting...
I remember this episode as a kid (11 y/o). Freaked me out.
I’m not surprised that some networks refused to air it. I lived as an Army brat in Puerto Rico at the time; the networks there had no such qualms.
Reminds me of this episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. (Conspiracy) Surprisingly graphic for TV at the time:

“I still have my secret decoder badge.”
I had the cardboard spaceship!
Yeah, one of my earliest memories as a child was of that space monster burning up and spitting out crew members. Gave me nightmares!
That still gives me the shivers...!
...and Shakespeare's "The Tempest" made Forbidden Planet possible. ;-)
LOL! I remember reading that the stagehands from STOS would raid the garbage of the other shows for things that could be used on their set.

IMHO, there is no such thing as 'bad' Trek....some of them are just better than others.
Star Wars, on the other hand, was unwatchable after the first trilogy.
Um....tractor beams are for pulling and pushing.
Antigrav units are for 'lifting'.
Just sayin'!
:-)
Has been arguments....hmmmm
