MILTON WVA---The Centers for Disease Control has released some startling statistics about teen pregnancy in West Virginia.
The number of 15 to 17 year old girls giving birth in the state is up 17 percent.
West Virginia is the only state with that kind of spike.
Teen mother Julie Akers is raising two children. She was a sophomore in high school when she first got pregnant. She says it wasn't easy to grow up fast and she wants other teens to know about the realities of being a young mom.
"It was every day just getting up, making bottles, changing diapers, changing clothes and going to doctors appointments," Akers said.
She adds though that her life is better because her children are in it.
According to the latest state figures Calhoun, Clay, Mingo, McDowell and Tyler counties had the highest rates of teen births in West Virginia.

Nan I sometimes honestly believe pregnancy is something passed along in the water! Really! It spreads like a virus in some areas.
I wonder why West Virginia is the only state with this type of spike?
Has HHS been handing out more condoms and unbiased literature in those areas....or have Arne Duncan’s sex ed programs been fully implemented? /sarc
That is why I posted it here, am wondering too!!!!
None that I know of. Or aware of.
Only thing I can guess is that MTV show about the pregnant teens?
Moral ping!
Need more input on why teen pregnancies are only spiking in West Virginia.
thanks Morgana
And below the fold:
“Sun rose in the east today. Setting in the west expected later today.”
with an eclipse at noon.
I was actually using sarcasm there....but I wonder just how much the radical Democrat ideology has taken hold in your state?
Has Justin Bieber been there recently?
Actually from what I have read about Planned Parenthood here I naturally assumed that could be the cause!
More likely however it is something to do with the media. Is that MTV show with the pregnant teens still on the air? It does glorify being a teen mother. In fact it would cause Planned Parenthood to lose money.
Plus “Calhoun, Clay, Mingo, McDowell and Tyler counties” are among the poorest counties. Could it be that these girls are getting pregnant seeking something better? Just don’t know.
First let me say that it really bothers me the way kids are getting sexual active so young, but, I think God these girls are not killing their babies.
What about Laz?
“First let me say that it really bothers me the way kids are getting sexual active so young,”
Well you may thank the democrats for that!
“but, I think God these girls are not killing their babies.”
and thank the pro life right for that!
Didnt Bill Clinton visit about 7-10 months ago? ;-)
Yea Slick Willy was here, problem is oral sex is not sex. (won’t get a girl pregnant)
“She was a sophomore in high school when she first got pregnant. She says it wasn’t easy to grow up fast and she wants other teens to know about the realities of being a young mom.”
Ok, so it was so hard having one child, she went ahead and had another? Did she not figure it out the first time?
Maybe these girls looked at the crappy unemployment numbers and made an informed decision that a child would entitle them to gov’t benefits
It would be interesting to know why there seems to be a sudden spike in those numbers. You’re right that the media can influence this to a certain degree. It would seem to me that this presents a great opportunity for local churches to do something very good. If they do it together...even better.
