'Zombie' released after two days in county jail

One of the victims bitten by a man claiming he was a zombie said she’s worried her life may never be the same.

She’s worried because her attacker, who police believe was intoxicated on Spice at the time of incident, was released after spending only two days in jail.

Jack Ray Murphy, 19, was arrested Oct. 24 charged with felony aggravated assault. Police say he bit two people at The Pines in Show Low. Two days later the charges were reduced to misdemeanor assault by the county attorney’s office and Murphy was released.

The female victim, who is a health care nurse, said two days is simply not enough time for anyone to detox from Spice.

She said she is worried about her injuries and recovery, but she is just as concerned that her attacker gets the help he needs. She was disappointed to learn that officials with the Navajo County Judicial System released him.

She was relieved, however, to learn just a few days ago that prosecutors reinstated the original felony charge.

Navajo County Prosecutor Mark French said the decision to reduce the charge was made by an assistant while he was on vacation. He said given the “insanity” involved in the incident he has since decided to reinstate felony aggravated assault charges.

Even knowing that her attacker is facing felony charges, the female victim says she no longer feels as safe as she used to in her own home.

She is also worried about her children and others who live at The Pines.

Since the attacks, residents at The Pines have taken to either walking in groups or with dogs or weapons like sticks or clubs for protection.

The female victim said she now locks her doors at all times while constantly looking over her shoulder.

She said previously insignificant bumps in the night now have her fearing it might be someone wishing to harm her or her family.

The woman’s husband is a prison guard, so she said she feels safer when he is home, but when he is away it’s a different story. She not only fears for her own safety, but that of her school-age children.

She said if the Oct. 24 attack had happened just a little later in the afternoon, her kids, and others who live at The Pines, would have been coming home from school.

Show Low Police detective Brad Provost said the man was told not to return to the area where the attacks occurred. According to the victims, the man has been back to The Pines at least twice since the attacks occurred. Provost said he had returned to The Pines on Oct. 28 at which time he was picked up by police.

The female victim said she asked about getting an order of protection but was told it’s not possible - yet. She said she was informed that it requires two occurrences to get an order of protection. Given the vicious nature of the attacks, her attacker's apparent inability to stay away from drugs and a previous incident in Ohio, she thinks she should have been granted the order.

The second victim in the bite attacks, the maintenance man for The Pines, said that on Oct. 28 he saw his attacker walking along White Mountain Road towards The Pines. He said the man dove Rambo-like into some bushes along the highway before making his way into the neighborhood. That is when police issued him a written order not to return or he would be arrested for trespassing.

The female victim said it’s good her attacker is being held accountable for his actions, but she wants him to get the help he needs so he won’t do it again.

This is the second time known to law enforcement that Murphy has bitten someone while on drugs.

The first time was on July 4, of this year in Ohio. He spent 20 days in lock-up for that offense.

The woman victim in the Show Low incident said she has lost some of the use of her left arm as a result of being bitten and she now has to keep an eye on everyone, in case she runs into her attacker in public.

Victim’s account of what happened

The original report from police was not entirely accurate, according to the victims.

The female victim said she was sitting outside her upstairs condominium at The Pines when the man, later identified as Murphy, stumbled into the parking lot in his stocking feet, bleeding from his left hand. She and the maintenance man went to his aid at which time he asked them to look at his hand.

The woman said she did not want to come in contact with the man’s blood but examined his hand as best she could before determining that it was broken.

It is believed the man broke his hand when banging his fists against the door of a friend’s home in Cedar Ridge where he went after smoking Spice with a different friend earlier in the day.

When the maintenance man went to the office to call for help, Murphy reportedly turned on the female victim. At the base of the stairs leading to the woman’s condominium, he allegedly leaned in, grabbed her forearm and proceeded to bite a chunk of flesh and muscle out of it.

Hearing the woman screaming, the maintenance man ran back and began struggling with the attacker, attempting to get him to quit chewing on her forearm. They fought to the base of the stairs where the maintenance man made his way behind the attacker before pulling him off of her using a choke hold. That is when the attacker bit the maintenance man’s arm.

The maintenance man, still having the man in a choke hold, slammed his head into the railing at the base of the stairs dislodging the railing from its moorings. The maintenance man released the attacker. Undeterred, Murphy began advancing and hissing as if to attack again. The maintenance man lost his balance while backing away and fell over a planter wall.

The attacker turned his attention to the first victim.

Unable to get hold of her he instead began smashing his fists into a parked car. The maintenance man told Murphy that if he did not back off he would hit him in the head with a 24-inch pipe wrench from his maintenance cart.

Murphy disregarded the warning. After hissing and telling the maintenance man he was zombie who was going to “eat his brains,” Murphy approached as if to attack and was hit in the head with the pipe wrench. Shrugging that off, Murphy approached the man as if to attack again and was once more met with a blow from the 24-inch pipe wrench.

The second blow had the desired effect.

Murphy staggered a bit before walking away at first, then running away in his stocking feet. He eventually made it to his older sister’s home where police found and arrested him.

Oh, yeah. One of the guys at work mentioned this, his teenager was telling him about it. Apparently, it can still be legally purchased (for now). I think that he called it something different, though.

We - including his kid - all agreed that it was a pretty bad idea to try it. Said my coworker - "I smoked stupid things in college, but this lowers the bar."

What is Spice?/i>

"a mixture of traditionally used medicinal herbs, each of which supposedly produces mild effects with the overall blend resulting in the cannabis-like intoxication produced by the product."

Translation: junk.

She’s in AZ. She doesn’t need a CCW.

some make people hungry and sleepy

Lol. I never did weed in college, but I never looked down my nose at those who did. I preferred to go out and have a few (or more) beers and a good time. The people I knew who smoked dope pretty much just sat around talking about how stoned they were. Just not my scene.

This stuff, however, sounds like bad news. Just because its legal doesn't make it a good idea .... a thought, unfortunately, that's lost on most of today's youth.

"Jack Ray Murphy, 19...bit two people at The Pines in Show Low."

Had he bit me or a loved one, it would have been the last time he had ever used his own teeth for anything but a necklace.

Some news gal on Fox mentioned they’d banned ‘bath salts’ because idjits were either snorting or smoking them.

[I can’t recall which because frankly, I didn’t give a damn if they killed their stupid selves or not]

:)
