Alaska faces one of its worst storms ever, forecasters say
CNN Blog ^ | November 8th, 2011 | Brad Lendon

Winds near hurricane force of 74 mph were expected to generate seas as high as 25 feet in the northern Bering Sea, forecasters said. The winds were expected to raise sea levels as much as 9 feet in the Norton Sound. Those levels combined with the high waves were expected to cause significant coastal erosion and major flooding. The winds may also push sea ice on shore, adding to the dangers, NWS forecasters said.

The creed by which they live:

"You HAVE to go out there....you don't necessarily have to come back."

Incredibly brave..for me...the bravest of the brave...I was in the military, though never saw combat..but always believed that I would be able to rise to the challenge if called.

Police and firefighters are courageous, but in the majority of cases they can, to some extent, define, shape, and control the situation. And can always back off and regroup.

But to go out into a raging gale, a storm that covered hundreds of square miles..to confront the full ferocity of nature..in a small cutter..or worse, to fly into that in a rescue chopper...I honestly don't think I could do it..

That photo somehow reminds me of an aged Kurgan (from Highlander). Well, an aged, metro Kurgan.

I have something to say... It's better to commit fraud, than to fade away...

So...do you think one has the potential for snow in the Seattle area? I mean...we also usually need a cold front coming down out of the Fraser Valley to get snow, but it HAS happened differently in the past.

Last year, just before Thanksgiving, we did a have a day of snow. It affects my business quite adversely when it snows.

Also, over on Facebook, I have a friend who is a cop up in a remote area of Alaska. He posted that they were about to be hit by what he called a “25-year” storm. He said he might be incommunicado for a few days until it passes.

You know, looking at the charts, I would say you just might see a little snowfall in Seattle on Sunday morning. I can’t really see if all this cold air will make it that far south but the Low will be tracking just south of Seattle and if there is some cold air north of the Low, you may see some snow.

If I’m right, send me a dollar...if I’m wrong, well, the upper level support never developed, the low didn’t track as progged, the model was wrong...etc etc (get it, I’m never wrong...LOL!!!)

Thank you. If nothing happens, I’ll just remember the last part about you never being wrong. :)

Oh...I checked the map. My cop friend lives in Homer...not exactly west coast of Alaska, but still....

It looks to me that most of the “town” will be underwater if they have a 6-9 foot surge with six foot waves on top of that.
