Stalin trusted no one except the one man no one should trust.
You’ve got your Quans crossed. Ghingghis died on campaign against the Tanguts [from a previous hunting accident -fell off his horse] in 1227. Uggedai, who ordered the attack after his coronation in about 1234, died in the winter of 1241, about the time the Mongols took both Buda and Pest. Word reached them when they were raiding Vienna and patrolling northern Italy in the Spring of 1242. Poland had been torched in 1241.
Under the Jasagh [the Law Code] all princes of the blood [most of whom were with Sabotai], and all the ranking generals were required to return to Mongolia to elect a new Qa Quan.
Baghdad was taken by Chingghis’ grandson, Hulegu, at the order of the Qa Quan Mongke, his older brother. Mongke was on campaign in the Sung Empire of southern China with another of Hulegu’s brothers, Qublai. Baghdad was taken in 1258, some 31 years after Chingghis Quan’s death.
Temüjin, Chinggis Khan’s actual name as Chinggis Khan is his title as “Universal Ruler”, had tangled with the Tanguts before his ill fated siege of Zhongxing. In 1209 he chose to take on the Tanguts as a stepping stone towards his eventual aims on destroying the Jurchen (which he will never get to finish himself). He surrounded what was at that time, the Tangut capital of Yinchuan in October and as a result received the recognition by the Tangut as Overlord and pick up a bride in a Tangut princess at the same time.
The Tangut were not very good about living up to their promises to Chinggis though and didn’t fulfill their pledge to provide troops which led to Chinggis’ return in 1226 with the goal of wiping the Tanguts out. His untimely death in August of 1227 was kept secret until after the Tangut capital was captured and sacked. Succession then fell to the aforementioned third son Ögödei (I’m just using the Pinyin spelling) who was designated Khaghan (khan of khans) to separate him from his brothers who were all now also khans.
I stand corrected on my Quan qonfusion.
It khan happen.
There was a company size [or so] contingent of Mongol troops with the coalition forces in Baghdad. Shades of 1258. Bet the locals were REAL polite!
Thanks for sharing the pics!
