I once knew a gal who worked her way through university doing exotic dancing. Never borrowed a dime from anyone, and graduated with honors, while living ten times better than her classmates.

She also never got sucked into the sleazy side of that business, either. When I knew her, she was some sort of administrator in a large corporation.
