The following is an excerpt from the July 1943 issue of Mass Transportation Magazine. This was written for male supervisors of women in the work force during World War II.

Eleven Tips on Getting More Efficiency Out of Women
Employees: There's no longer any question whether transit companies should hire women for jobs formerly held by men. The draft and manpower shortage has settled that point. The important things now are to select the most efficient women available and how to use them to the best advantage.
Here are eleven helpful tips on the subject from Western Properties:
1. Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters, they're less likely to be flirtatious, they need the work or they wouldn't be doing it, they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently.
2. When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. It's always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy.
3. General experience indicates that "husky" girls - those who are just a little on the heavy side - are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.
4. Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination - one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit for the job.
5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up.
6. Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they'll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves.
7. Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.
8. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.
9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can't shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a woman - it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency.
10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl's husband or father may swear vociferously, she'll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this.
11. Get enough size variety in operator's uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can't be stressed too much in keeping women happy.
That video reminds me of an off color joke that was told back in the 60s. The punchline was, “no thank you, but I WOULD like some of your famous T.W.A. Tea.”
We had a female working at our head office who had the following saying on a bumper sticker sized plaque on her desk:
51% Sweetheart
49% Bitch
Don't push it.
Considering that men also have need to use the toilet seat in the down position, there is no reason to not leave it there. So, it’s used in the down position more than half the time anyway. The man can also benefit from that little thoughtful act on his part.
Whatever happened to men thinking of their wives on occasion. Knowing that the next person using the toilet is likely to need it down, common courtesy could kick in.

Nevertheless, at night, in the dark or when you're sick, you don't always have time to flip it down.
My husband actually likes my hair short. What is this all men like long hair business? Of course, even tho in general I’m pretty traditional, it’s MY hair. I certainly don’t tell him how to wear HIS hair.
And, reading thru that piece, I think...yeah, I can see why the wife/girlfriend had a 17 monthlong headache.... Seriously, how hard IS it to put a toilet seat down? I don’t recall having to train anyone except 3 little boys to do it. (the seat AND lid should be down before you flush to keep from potentially aerosol of germs into the air). Men who refuse to do it have a problem, I personally think it’s some sort of passive aggressive act. They leave it up to irritate the woman in their life. Why? I don’t know. When I can make someone I love happy with something that simple, I do it. If a couple is fighting about that I have to wonder what the real problem is. :)
Most men I know are reasonable people. I think TV and movies these days gives us a warped view of them.
I dont’ think a good manager belittles employees at all. Well, unless they are trying to get them to quit.
That’s interesting. And it would explain things like why a woman can do something like take care of 3 toddlers while cooking dinner, making halloween costumes, etc, and a man will forget and burn the dinner while running to see what one of the children is doing. Makes perfect sense. Interestingly, as I’ve gotten older I am not nearly as good at all that multitasking I was able to do when my kids were little (they are all grown and gone now) and I wonder how I was able to do all of that.
Also fascinating! I love this stuff, and that makes sense, altho I am definitely the navigator in our family. Give me a map and I’m good to go. (I do like a map, but I can deal without one, because I WILL get out and ask directions). Of course, with GPS now it’s even better, altho ours lies to us sometimes, but that’s a whole other story).

If you noticed my wording, I did not say I refused to look at the site. I said I NEVER use it as a reference. “If” they agree with other reliable sources then I factor that in. But I will not cite them as a source/reference.
I know, I’ve read it before. Funny about the toilet seat, some men do get wound up enough about it to even write to Dear Abby (or was it Ann Landers?). Back in the day there was quite the ongoing thing in one of their columns about that topic. Just like the “which side of the roll the toilet paper should come off of (front or back) bruhaha”. Until then it had never occurred to me it should matter. But lots of people apparently DO care if it rolls from the top or from the bottom. I always think people (especially couples) should do their best to keep the peace about things. I don’t complain about sports on tv. He puts up with plenty. :)
You can completely take the girl out of everything you wrote and it still holds true. My experience was always that there is a sharp decline in EVERY aspect of a male employee’s performance for every year below 30. 18, 19, and 20, were all pretty much worthless.
I can agree with the decline...dealing with immature people is certainly a challenge for management...and the youngsters today think the world should dance around their every whim. .....When they hit the real work environment it’s a rude awakening some don’t handle well at all. Not prepared that employeers expect a days wages for a days work....rather they attempt to make managers their “friends” and step over all sorts of boundaries. Often the management team can and do cross boundary lines themselves.
I came to work one day watching a 40 yr old female manager tickling to the ground a 20 yr’ old employee....others buying gifts for one another...this just goes over healthy workplace boundaries IMO. But I am more conservative, they are much the liberal mindset....you can imagine the friction daily I have!

What is called “entertainment” has coarsened and degraded our culture almost beyond belief.
(Smart enough to look at the terlet seat before sittin' on it, I wonder?)
Seriously, my mom always wanted the lid shut. I imagine if one of y'all people too sick to look before you sit would have made a real mess on that-- specially with that fuzzy cover she always put on it-- the one that would keep the lid from standing upright.
