Path to the nomination: Did Cain’s end yesterday?
Washington Post ^ | 08:45 AM ET, 11/01/2011 | By Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 11/01/2011 7:09:51 AM PDT by DBCJR

Herman Cain was in the center of a firestorm, largely of his own making, yesterday. He knew before he entered the presidential race that he had a sexual harassment settlement in his past. He knew, ever since Politico started questioning his campaign, that a story was afoot. He knew he had to get the story out quickly and truthfully. And yet, by the end of the day, the business executive peddling his leadership skills and know-how looked somewhat like the hapless PBS executive who eventually got ousted for screwing up the Juan Williams firing.

...

Iowans don’t need to believe he is innocent of sexual harassment to vote for him. But they do need to trust him. Virtually everything that happened yesterday with regard to this issue served to damage his trustworthiness. Beyond the point of no return? We’ll find out.

This should serve as a warning to all the vanity candidates (i.e., those without experience who run essentially as celebrities) in this and future cycles: A presidential nomination process is brutal and serious stuff. If they think there is no downside to competing, they are wrong. They may, at the end, come out diminished people, less respected and liked than when they went in.

Some people call this unfair and harmful to our political process. I disagree. If unserious and ill-prepared candidates try to take the voters for a ride, don’t bother to understand the issues or even their own weaknesses, they pretty much get what they deserve. And if voters bury their heads in the sand and vote for them anyway, they deserve what follows as well.

>>You are really an awful person to be believing that only attractive woman deserve to be conservatives.<<

Ken didn’t say that. He said all conservative women are beautiful, because beauty is not on the outside. It comes from within.

Indianrightwinger, don’t read into other’s posts what isn’t there.

From a “matronly but beautiful conservative”

But, but, but there are some concerned FReepers here saying this is the end of the Cain Train? How can this be? It is going to backfire on those smear merchants.

Pray for America

Jennifer Rubin presents the liberal slant: voters will vote for a person who engages in sexual misconduct (i.e.,g Bill Clinton), but not somebody who is evasive about it (as though Clinton’s evasions didn’t count after he was caught).

We cannot be hypocrites. We have to have our standards. If Herman Cain engaged in sexual misconduct, sexual assault (to include rape) and abuse of power, the way Bill Clinton did while Governor and while President, we cannot support him. On the other hand, if what we have are different sexual mores in the workplace, nothing objectively wrong. If, supposing he was informed that something he did was offensive, he apologized and didn’t persist in the behavior, then this would speak well about him, not badly.

:)

OK. Thanks! Although, the subsequent posting of Jennifer Rubin’s picture and claiming that how she looks proves she is a liberal does sound pretty awful to me.

This will become a full-time drama in which, at best, Cain may be thought to be an incompetent crisis manager and, at worst, a creep and a liar

Is that all you got? You wrote the same garbage on another thread.

" I am an American. Black. Conservative. I don't use African-American, because I'm American, I'm black and I'm conservative.

I don't like people trying to label me. African- American is socially acceptable for some people, but I am not some people."

The WarshPost has their whole stable out running around this track. Rubin's comments were more tacky than useful, but a response I prepared for Dana Milbank's comment works well here:

muawiyah 8:56 AM EDT

The media companies have signed their own confidentiality agreements so any of these cases that we know occurred on their premises involving their reporters and managers simply cannot be discussed BY ANY OF THEM.

On the other hand we are free to use those cases as clubs to beat them senselessly into submission.

I suspect there's a case or two in Dana's background that has served only to give his female bosses and coworkers a way of forcing him to tell any line they find convenient.

Alas, none of us can know because these things are all confidential.

In fact, let me go further ~ there's not a male writer at the Post who is free to discuss any of these issues honestly due to arrangements made after they were charged with "uncomfortableness", or maybe even "psychological rape", by women who WON!

Not even Eugene!

Even some of the diesel dykes on the staff have a similar problem.

If the Posties were free to talk who knows what tales they might tell. Alas, they are not free so they propagandize against innocent black men who are uppity enough to run for President as Republicans.

.

Both Richard Cohen and Juan Williams were attacked with alleged sexual harassment charges at the Washington Post (or papers they owned).

In both cases I believe the attackers were on the "money hole" side and not the "news hole" side so it was unlikely either guy even know the people attacking them.

These didn't go to the EEOC or federal court ~ they were handled IN HOUSE so we don't even know what they were really about, who the parties really were, or what the outcome was. Juan's not there anymore. Richard works in Boston ~ as a semi-retired columnist. We can only guess they were stripped down to the epaulets and knickers eh!

I can’t wait for the polls at the end of the week showing Cain in first place. These liberals Romney and Perry are trying to take down Cain and it won’t work.

Did you read my initial remark? I suspect this is a witch hunt like the Libs going after Thomas. It is Liberal racism at its ugliest.

Sorry if I offended you, but you missed my points.

Rubin is so in ther tank for Mitt, it's pathetic. Over 60% of her WP blog posts have been supportive of Romney or attacking his opponents. THat makes her a pro-Mitt advocate, and NOT a reasonably objective conservative blogger..

Here on FR, we've LONG rejoiced, in both words AND pics, in the beauty and grace of conservative women in the media...so I was making a little joke, a riff, on Rubin's lack of, well..bodaciousness. Again, sorry if I upset you.

Every regular person I heard on the radio yesterday, and every person I talked to about the smears, told me they thought it was garbage. But what do I know? I’m not a “pundit”. *Sigh*

what happened to reporters investigating and launching a story when they had proof? I don't think there is an investigative journalist left on the planet. Only bloggers and bloggers with worthless journalism degrees.

Personally, I think that’s why Michelle Obama looks so homely to me. It’s not what’s outside, because beauty comes from within. If she wasn’t such an evil control freak, she would be much more attractive.

But hey, I’m no beauty queen myself!

In my mind, Cain’s bigger problems are his past position in the FED, TARP bailout support, Backing Romney in 2008, etc.
