In December of 1966, Lynn White, Jr. (1907-1987) delivered a controversial speech in Washington, D.C. entitled "The historical roots of our ecological crisis." White charged that Christianity "bears a huge burden of guilt" in helping to foster the present-day "out of control" degradation of the environment. White singled out Western Christianity as being primarily responsible for the wedding between science and technology that has left a devastating ecological scar on the modern landscape ...

The default religion of humanity is human sacrifice.

Darwin and environmentalism implicitly wish to re-institute it.

“...he also suggests that the mentality of the Industrial Revolution, that the earth was a resource for human consumption, was much older than the actuality of machinery, and has its roots in medieval Christianity and attitudes towards nature. He suggests that “what people do about their ecology depends on what they think about themselves in relation to things in their environment.” He argued that Judeo-Christian theology was fundamentally exploitative of the natural world because:

The Bible asserts man’s dominion over nature and establishes a trend of anthropocentrism.
Christianity makes a distinction between man (formed in God’s image) and the rest of creation, which has no “soul” or “reason” and is thus inferior.”

It would seem that the above not demonstrates the limitations of White’s historical knowledge but his complete ignorance of Christianity.

Darwinism and environmentalism working together plunges mankind entirely into a holistic natural world that cannot be escaped. Here holism shakes hands with totatitarianism, which, of course, has little regard for people.

Anyone who is a Christian would understand ...as would someone who has taught history. “Professor” White is allowing a strong bias to color his perspective.

Unreal!

To prove Mr. White’s thesis you’d first have to come up with an example of a society that developed an equivalent level of technology but chose not to use its potential to devastate the environment.

Otherwise, it is entirely possible other societies did less damage to the environment because they had less ability, not greater ethics.

It is nice, however, to see someone agree that western civ and Christianity is at the root of science.

It is dispiriting to see the most common flaw of criticisms of Christianity and western civ. The good aspects, when recognized at all, are taken for granted, on the assumption they would have happened anyway. The negative aspects are used to show how irredeemably and uniquely evil they are.
