Okay, you want a GREAT food deal but you don't like fiddling around with coupons. Good news! I have been taking advantage of an incredible bargain at Walmart for several weeks. Here it is:
A 2 lb bag of frozen WILD flounder for just $5.27. That is only $2.63 per pound. I stress WILD because wild caught fish are much better than farm raised fish which just don't have the same rich taste.
I am now eating this WILD flounder at least 3 times per week, including last night. What is great about it is not only the flavor but also the texture. It is best cooked with onions and Adobe seasoning.
Compare this price to that of the cost of flounder in Publix which is $7.99 for a 20 oz bag. I've eaten tilapia but, believe me, WILD flounder is much better.
Best bargain on fish I ever got was at Pathmark — I stopped in for five minutes to make a quick purchase and heard an unadvertised “manager’s special”. I happened to talk to him because I was curious about the $2.00/lb pound for that afternoon only. It turned out that the previous manager found out that he was about to by axed, so he tripled or quadrupled the usual order of fresh fish (along with other perishables).
Cash and Carry has their 20# bag of basmati rice for under $16 until the end of the month IIRC...that beats Costco’s price by several dollars....IIRC....oh, the memory...
some elitist would have a natural bias against anything Walmart......we peasants know that food is food....
Reading: Pacific flounder is good to eat. They say Atlantic is overfarmed.
Definitely. Only buy prepackaged from WalMart. Their meat is horrible, the fruit tends to be freezer burnt. They get those cheap prices at a price. If it’s prepackaged from a brand you trust they probably won’t sully their reputation for Wally (usually it’s portion size they shrink to make Wally’s price demands), but if there isn’t a brand to defend the quality bad things happen.
I buy most of my seafood at Trader Joe’s. I don’t trust supermarkets when shopping for seafood.
What specifically do you make with amaranth and millet?
No way. Whole Foods has great organic and local produce, kick ass pastured eggs (they are from such healthy chickens with a good diet that you can eat them raw) and they have great grassfed beef!!
I've seen a whole bunch of them 3 to 4 ft in length... many a bit shorter too, which if I was looking to eat one, I'd take the fillet knife to one of the smaller ones. I never ate one. Seeing them in the round, and catching a whiff of a certain note of their smell leaves a guy choosing something other to put his own knife to, when there is a choice. Rockfish of various sort, or Petrale sole if one has some of those.
My guess is they are something of a by-catch to other Alaskan catcher/processor fisheries. Nowadays, they are made to utilize that stuff, which is a good thing.
Avoid lefty Whole Foods if you can.
There are online sources that are just as cheap for your bulk items.
Amaranth can be used in a lot of stuff. We mix it with the millet for the starch part of the main meal. It’s alternative to the rices or barley.
Sure the produce is great but also not cheap. Expensive.
We get much cheaper veggies at the local Korean run marts and the farm stands.
Add a little eye of newt and you’ll see!
Unless eating at a nice restaurant (rare lately) my fish comes from the Chesapeake Bay and is caught by me. Rockfish, smoked bluefish, steamed crabs, oysters, speckled sea trout, occasional flounder. I’ve caught red drum only once.
In my book, the best tasting fish is black crappie. We get ‘em for free courtesy of hubby’s fishing skills. Stock up each fall, freeze and enjoy for months.
Other nutritious supermarket bargains: tuna fish, frozen spinach, dried beans.
Gluten free?
Walmart injects saline in their beef. Its not evenrecognizing red. I like Publix. You can’t beat their meat.
How is the fishing currently in the Chesapeake Bay? I know they did have pollution problems.
