Former House Speaker Newt Gingrichs positive attitude made him the clear winner in Tuesday nights Republican presidential debate, according to participants in a focus group conducted after the often contentious forum by pollster Frank Luntz. Only three people supported Gingrich when the debate began, but a large number in the crowd raised their hands when Luntz asked who supported him after it ended.

Rick Perry was totally negative.
He knows he is losing these debates and he wanted to look good so he went on the attack.
I wanted to see Rick Perry come out and be a little stronger against Mitt Romney, but he went about it the whole entire wrong way.

Newt did well before the focus group. Will need more money and organization, however, to go far in this race.
Despite his more aggressive performance, Ricky P. still turning folks off with his stupidity.
Immediately after the debate, Sarah said that Gingrich won, and WHY he won. She didn't need a focus group to tell her. She totally GETS the average American.
We don't need a Cheerleader on the sidelines. We need Sarah as our Nominee. Having a once-in-a-lifetime talent like Sarah Palin on the sidelines, in America's most desperate time of need is unacceptable.
She did call the debate results alright.
Unfortunately for her, her negatives were driven sky-high by the media since she came onto the scene in 08. She really could not be a strong general election candidate now.
Perry’s parade is over. He will never be elected President.
Gingrich is the new Bob Dole, the new John McCain — he’ll be pushed down our throats while everyone’s crapping themselves about Romney. Thanks Dagnabitt.
Well Romney polls better against Obama than Gingrich now, should I switch to Romney?
Not sold on Cain. He’s all over the place, and paper thin on foreign policy and social issues.
Perry? Dear God no. Appears to be be the least intelligent person on the national stage in years. Joe Biden stupid.
All the others lack the stature, gravitas, etc, to take seriously as national candidates.
I watched the Luntz group after the so-called debate. Keep in mind that the folks in Nevada are the ones who keep reelecting Harry Reid.
Perry needs to follow Cain’s lead and start appearing on every TV channel, where he can have more time to respond to questions and clearly explain his views. That’s the only way that people across the country will get a better understanding of his stances on various issues. ...The stupid “debates” only give one minute to answer and 30 seconds to address an attack. ....Romney chatters like a gattling gun, so gets in a lot of words. Texans can’t talk that fast, and being a Texan I can attest that I can’t even understand all that fast chatter that Mitt and Santorem spew out because the words all run together.
I don’t think Perry’s handlers are eager to increase his unscripted media exposure.
I agree with you completely.
Many Perry supporters are knocking Cain because he’s using the free media exposure. They’re saying that he’s taking every available interview because he doesn’t have a choice.
That may be true, but it’s working. He has time to defend his points of view. The voters have an opportunity to connect with the man.
The debate format is a horrible way for a candidate to rely on introducing themselves to the voters. First, there’s no time to really get a point out. Second, it’s rigged to hurt them. The only thing they’re good for is showing that a candidate can handle themselves under pressure. (I think that this is why people are so intent on seeing someone ‘look presidential’ during the debates.)
Perry should’ve gotten out there. Taken a dozen interviews. As a presidential contender, I should be sick of hearing his voice on the news every day. As it is, I actually find myself expecting Cain to do an interview every day or two. All of the candidates should’ve had better websites supporting and clarifying their positions.
Gingrich is by far the smartest there. But when he shows up on camera...I see a Washington insider.
Television viewers will psychologically pay more attention and give more weight to a candidate’s comments when presented as news rather than as a commercial.
Newt knows how the system works and the knowledge how to make it better. Than one who knows nothing and thinks he can do anything but needs training for him to carry out his tasks. Somehow the Oval Office became a training ground - what an insult to that office. We have it now w/the liberals, republicans are willing to do it again. I can’t call them conservatives because they are too clueless.
Darn straight!
There are some effective commercials, but most people tune them out. The assumption is that commercials are BS.
This just shows that Sarah Palin has the greatest gift a politician can have. She and the Average American are in perfect synch.

I knew Newt won every debate so far. Can I run for Pres?
She has made her decision -— TO BE A CHEERLEADER. In doing so, she has ruined any chance she had to be the leader of this country.
If you want inch-deep ‘analysis,’ the same kind used by lefty automatons, Luntz is your man.
**** Somehow the Oval Office became a training ground - what an insult to that office.****
George Washington had never held elective office before becoming President.
We have had career politician Presidents with ‘experience’ and look at the mess we are in.
